You can clearly feel that this game was made by and for D&D fans.
Instead of the overused orcs as the standard enemies, the developers chose the underappreciated gnolls, which is nice. You also must use fire to deliver the final blow on trolls, otherwise they'll regenerate exactly like in the TTRPG, which is very neat.
It's a shame that this game got kinda lost in the sands of time, because it's a great D&D licensed game and one helluva beat 'em up that must've been so fun to play on the arcade with three other people, like a true D&D party!

Somewhat more rough around the edges than its successor, Tower of Doom was still a very entertaining experience that would only be elevated by a co-op experience, which it's tailored for.
It's so much fun as a beat 'em up, but really becomes an elevated experience with the additions of choices, quests, and even a living, breathing world that seems straight out of a tabletop session. It even has a DM-intervension-like moment where you're warned 3 times against choosing the shorter path, which happens to house the most fearsome dragon in the land. After insisting on choosing the said path, you're immediately teleported to the dragon's lair and get one-shotted like a little crap bag. Truly an astounding experience.
