The game is a great sequel to the cliffhanger in the previous game. Everything mechanic wise about the game is pretty much similar to Half Life 2, which is not surprising given the title of the game.
The biggest feature of this game is the significant role that the physics gun plays within the game. There's an achievement for passing the game firing only a single bullet and there's a reason for it - you can pretty much just rely on the physics gun to butcher all the enemies in the rest of the game. So the game encourages you to play around with your surroundings with the physics gun and, though sound really good, didn't feel as good as expected. I think it just has to do with the fact that I like traditional shooting a lot more.
The game is much shorter than HL 2. I finished the game in around 3 hours. I think that's the greatest gripe I have with the game, which is that it's just unfortunately too short. For the game we got, it is pretty decent though. Although I really fucking hated that part where you have to navigate a room filled with laser bombs.
Overall, despite being a bit too short, Half Life 2: Episode One is still a pretty decent game. It is unfortunately my least favorite among all the Half Life games. However, it doesn't hurt to try it out as well to experience the Half Life story fully.

Honestly minus the cool puzzle parts with the grav gun, this expansion just felt kind of off. Because you are still in City 17 and The Citadel, everything feels like a retread of what happened in the original game, but just shorter. Still recommend though because its part of the whole HL2 experience
Mostly everything I said in my Half-Life 2 review stands. This is a great continuation of Half-Life 2. However, it certainly feels like a small episode in terms of how the story is progressed. Although, it still goes in a very interesting direction.
One thing I love about this game, however, is the character of Alyx. I won't say she was bad in the original Half-Life 2, but she did feel a bit bland. Here, she is given so much more life and personality that it's incredibly hard to dislike her. She is great!
Don't expect a complete upgrade like how it was from Half-Life 1 to 2. This is simply more Half-Life 2 with some new ideas thrown in. Overall, a really great time.
