Great start to the 3D environment. Not easy to go back to.

This game has not aged to well in terms of controls but otherwise is still fun

The game that changed gaming ever, the biggest impact in gaming till GTA 5. And although it hasn't aged in about almost every aspect. The world, atmosphere, charm, nuanced and colorful characters are timeless. And even the gameplay being dated, it's more than fun and surprisingly brutal. Limbs fall off and heads can be popped. I'm sure the pearl clutchers had a fit back then.

Claude for example, so much character for a mute character. The ending to this game shows that. Dude was fed up lol.

and ofc my 2nd fav character in the entire series, Donald Love. Holy god this fucking guy is the personification of intelligent, suave and cunning. Only Lex Luthor could mentor him.

Voiced by the lead in Twin Peaks, no joke, we have a mysterious businessman who asks to be his errand boy and do a set of missions that imply he's preparing for something, what that is? Well you never know because once you've done everything he asked... i won't spoil it. But once you realize what just happened... it's fucking INCREDIBLE. I was in awe, and this isn't even the main quest. This proved since the beginning Rockstar creative genius has been apparrent. And since Donald Love has been referenced in every GTA, and you can see easter eggs of him in 4 and 5. There's a background and tidbits behind the dude that's not plentiful but more than enough given the substance he has. Brilliant man.

Basically this review is a Donald Love fanboy post. But it's seriously worrying how overlooked he is. I hope he's in 6.

dropei pq eh injogavel pqp

I've not finished this game (most likely never will). Few stray thoughts

- Play the PS2 version
(PC and more-so later re-release/remasters completely remove the thick atmosphere of it.)

- Atmosphere = The dreary crime-ridden city vibe is very unique to this game, even compared to Vice City and San Andreas. Feels like London (winter sunrise, thick fog in evening, cold rains) but set in an American setting.
There's nothing quite like it.

- City/Open World = What I surprised was how big buildings feel, feels like an actual city. When the controller vibrated when the train passed above my head, it was strangely immersive.

- Missions = Very "clinical" and to-the-point (much like 2D GTA). You're a hired gun, a tool to carry out other people's work. So of course it feels boring because you have no stakes or involvement. But also, no other game does the "hired gun" game anymore.

Did not age as well as other GTAs

claude is a menace might finish it later iunno
aged like shit tho

Um dos melhores GTA que já joguei !!

GTA 3 defined open world games, its mechanics are revolutionary for the time, its engaging story and challenging missions make it unforgettable.

RUSH RUSH GOT THE YEYO?
BUZZ BUZZ GIMME YEYO!

Also funny anecdote, growing up almost all of my mates had this on PS2 and none of their discs worked.

The most irritating and broken game I have ever played

probably one of the most important games ever released, and one which is still pretty fun today. but by god it has not aged very well. hit and miss missions aplenty, and it can get very frustrating very quickly. the chaos of this game is one of its highlights, and its probably one of the best GTAs to screw around in. but pretty much everything else has been done better since.

I used to play a lot of iii/vc/sa when I was a kid, but never got the chance to finish one of them because back in the day I was only playing for fun with a notebook right on my sight with cheat codes.

But today this changed, finishing GTA III without no cheat codes was a succes, this game changed the landscape of gaming back in 2001 and no one knew that rockstar would deliver this game, before this game rockstar was mainly on top down games like GTA 1 and london.
Yet again the original port is very buggy and unstable so had to mod it and got the D.E.P modification so the game would be fixed, sad that it's no longer on steam with the rest of the trilogy.
I remember a sale with the whole trilogy that was around 7 euros sadly I missed it, even the steam version was very buggy and unstable as well.
This is the most influential game ever, the first 3d GTA game that was awesome when it launched, without this game we would not have the rest so this is an iconic game.
The story was not a big deal, you are a silent henchman taking missions from 3 different islands, portland, staunton, and shoreside vale.
The most memorable characters are after portland, after maria tells you that salvatore is trying to trick you so he can dump you.
Then you take missions from asuka, kenji, ray, donald and the final one with catalina, you seek revenge that your girlfriend betrayed you during a heist.
Not a big story but it was rockstar's first 3D and the attention to details and drawings to the characters is awesome, you can find some characters from other games like Toni from liberty city stories in the first missions of portland and Donald Love from vice city.
Missions can be a bit tough, but that only when you passed the mid part of the game, asuka's last missions can be very hard, and the time limit missions if you don't know the map too well because the markers will not guide you correctly all the time that's why they added triangles in vc and sa.
This again changed the lanscape of third person games and video games overall, next is vc and sa so yeah happy holidays everyone.

Solid gameplay makes a really good game

This game is wildly inconsistent; inconsistent with it's level of difficulty, story, and characters. Overall however, it was a chaotically fun time

Excellent game, grinding for all trophies was kinda wack though. So resorted to using cheats :P

nonsensical mission objectives and some of the worst traffic ai with overly aggressive gang members makes this one of the worst gta games for plain free roaming (not like theres much to do outside of the story anyway)

GTA's transition to 3D was great, and obviously compared to the games that followed after it like Vice City or San Andreas, it is rougher and still retains the essence of being more arcadey like the 2D GTA games. Here the missions are hard af, all the gangs wants you dead, and police cars are fast as shit. Also don't expect much from the story, it's not a big deal.
Besides, I also have a lot of love for the game because it was the first GTA I played (I played the PS2 port when I was a kid).
