Probably my Favorite sonic game overall. It just is the complete package. It has all the lessons learned from Sonic 1 and 2 and dials up the gameplay play and level design to 11. It even has an incredibly fun Water level, which is highmarks in my book. The second half of the game can drag after mushroom valley and Sky battery zone, but I think 2 iffy zones in the form of sky battery and Lava Reef is a small price to pay given the rest of the game has an excellent feel of play.

S3&K offers a much, MUCH more refined gameplay style from the previous 3 games (including CD), while keeping up the classic Sonic traditions of great music and art. While this game is far from perfect, it was an overall decently enjoyable time, and one of the best Sonic games I have played.

Sandopolis and Death Egg are terrible zones, but I'm not letting that bring down my score too much.
What an accomplishment this game is for the series, even all these years later.

it's the worst genesis sonic, which is to say it's still pretty okay.
a handful of good levels (hydrocity one of the greatest) but mostly boring or plain old dogshit ones. my hottest take here is that the "& knuckles" half is more consistent in quality but the difference between the two isn't that big. levels like marble garden and ice cap stand out as some of my least favorite in the series, while oddly i was never bothered by sandopolis.
the presentation is very good, the art direction isn't as cozy/simple as sonic 1 or experimental as CD but it transcends sonic 2's goofy cartoon vibe almost effortlessly, if that's not your thing (it's not really mine!). i think SA1 is the closest the series got to recapturing this atmosphere and i don't think anyone would really argue that. and holy hell that soundtrack is probably an easy top 5 in the series

Like Sonic 2 except this one is stretched out to utterly miserable degrees. One of the worst I've played

The Mack daddy. A pillar of the platforming genre

Easily the most well crafted Sonic game. SEGA hit a perfect balance between the speed of Sonic 2 and the exploration of Sonic CD with much better layouts than both. It was massive for its time and it still amazes me how much was packed into it.

3 playable characters experience the same zones in totally different ways with pathways only they can access, while also serving as different difficulties (Knuckles = Hard Mode). Everything is connected - each level is huge and branching with their own boss fights, transitioning smoothly into the next. Special stages are entered by finding hidden giant rings and are actually fun and worthwhile now, granting access to two super forms and an extra final fight as Sonic.

I particularly love how Sonic 3 tells two stories without any words, using only the character animations and changes in your surroundings. I also think the visual aesthetic and sound peaked here - wonderful parallax backgrounds and the more detailed threatening robot designs are so badass.

In all aspects the other classics just aren't in the same league. This is a masterpiece of 2D platforming and I credit it for really igniting my interest in video games as a child. It's depressing to think that since they perfected this formula 30 years ago, only one game used it again (Mania).

To me, this is the best 2D Sonic game of all time, and one of my favorite 2D platformers. The amount of content that is this fun just amazes me. The level design just seems to be more up my speed for me with having some more platforming that i felt Sonic 2 lacked, but not forgetting the fun fast paced Speed of that game either. I love all of the music too. It's no wonder why i do because Michael Jackson played a big part into these tracks. I like how this game rewards you for exploring as any of the playable characters. This games feels like the whole package of what i want from a 2D Sonic game and i could not be more happier.

2nd best sonic game if Sonic mania didn't exist, overall a must play tittle.

Introduced the GOAT. Easily Top 3 in the series still. Right behind Sonic 2 in level quality

By far the best of the classic Sonic games, because Knuckles is fucking awesome

I can't remember much about this game other than it had Knuckles in it, I wasn't as much of a fan of Knuckles as I was tales but the game was alright, not too memorable. what I remember most was that you could connect too cartridges together.

Literally the best game I've ever played. One of the first games I ever beat. Will probably forever be that game for me.

this is a really weird game for me
like on one hand its got a lot of really awesome bits and music and set pieces
like hydrocity for example is probably my favourite classic sonic level ever
but like also
its really annoying in specific parts (carnival night, marble garden) and that kind of holds it back a lot
its the best of the original trilogy, and while mania is probably better, i still kind of prefer this game over it anyways because
feelings are weird

This was certainly a journey. It had many ups and downs...first, i want to start with the pros:

Soundtrack: I absolutely loved the soundtrack, they really added onto the experience and fit the theme of the stages really well, it is definitely the strongest soundtrack out of the classic sonic games.

Characters: The idea of having different storylines between sonic/tails and knuckles is really enjoyable and adds extra levels of replayability

Special Stages: I think the special stage minigame is exciting and captures a trial-and-error system well. Minus the fact I struggled against 1 stage for the super emeralds in particular it felt rewarding to get the emeralds. However, the way to get special stages becomes a con for me.

Shields: I love this system! The idea of having different elemental shields was so enriching for the experience. not only does it add an extra hit, but it also adds extra bits of situational advantages to the gameplay, such as the bubble shield adding water breathing and a BOUNCY effect to a lightning shield magnetizing rings to sonic and granting a double jump and resistance to electric attacks and lastly the fire shield granting invulnerability to fire-based attacks and granting a dash. The shields feel at home in this title, especially because of how HUGE the stages are in comparison to previous entries.

Boss battles: DEFINITELY the best bosses out of the previous entries, adding a variety of different gimmicks the bosses utilize the theme of the stages to grant a positive challenging experience. There is also mini-bosses in act 1 that are just as enjoyable.

CONS

Getting special stages: I didn't really like the idea of having to search all over an already huge act within 10 minutes to find giant rings to access these special stages. Sonic 2 had a system that rewarded players for collecting 50 rings and avoiding obstacles with precision once they reached a checkpoint to grant them the opportunity to get a chaos emerald that felt more natural and within the flow of a speedy game, this game. However, it forces you at multiple times to take it slow to check a wall that may break and reveal a big ring just so you may get a chaos emerald which just rubbed me the wrong way

Obstacle placement: I think some of the obstacles in this game were out to get me just outrageously, however not as bad as sonic 1 level design and sonic 2's Metropolis zone.

...
It's Sonic 3&Knuckles
Do I need to say anything else???

Fuck you hydrocity crab badnik. kill yourself. also why isnt nintendo Ds an option for platform

Classic Sonic in it's most rounded out form, almost no issues with the game whatsoever. If you could only play one Sonic game, let alone a 2D Sonic game, this would be the choice,

too hard, too long, my thumb hurt...

Cara sei lá, esse jogo e o Mania tão empatado comigo sobre qual é o melhor Sonic 2D

(This is a review for both games)
In theory, this game is the perfect 2D sonic: excellent soundtrack, a well-told but not intrusive story, inventive and speedy levels... well, for the most part.
Unfortunately, it's a case of quite a few tiny cracks in its hull that bring this ship down a little bit. Every level seems to have some obtuse gimmick that has no right to be in a sonic game (the spinning wheels of Marble Garden, the infinite pits of Ice Capp, tedious seesaws in Mushroom hill, too many aspects of Sandopolis to count, instant death crushers in Flying battery and who could forget the barrels of doom).
If none were there, I would absolutely say this is the greatest 2D Sonic. But they are. So it's not.

Also quick one about the MJ/Jetzons original soundtrack. I definitely prefer Icecap, launch base I could go either way but the original carnival night track is genuinely awful for a Sonic. It has no driving rhythm; in fact, there are tons of long awkward stops, a but like the actual level. Also, using the Entry of the Gladiators melody in your circus-themed composition is just creatively bankrupt. I know music is about personal taste but I think this track is horribly overrated still.
