The lack of SBMM and the familiarity of Tetris mechanics forces you to directly confront a fact that every other battle royale attempts to obfuscate: your success in this game is almost entirely dependent on luck. Got a Tetris lifer in your lobby? A hyperfixated preteen with lightning reflexes? Enjoy your 43rd place! Invictus theoretically narrows the permissible range of player skill to allow for better-balanced matches, but truly, who has the time?
I got my Tetris Maximus and, God willing, I will never look back.

Wow, I haven't thought about this game in months, yet I used to play it almost every day. It feels like the big brother to Tetris DS, another high water mark in the annuls of Tetris brilliance. Immaculate gameplay, interesting badges to play for, lovely game themes to suit your mood, and all the challenge and fun you expect from the best game ever. Bravo.
TL;DR: A pretty fun but flawed game, Tetris 99 is great at what it does, but not much else. The battle system is really unique and works surprisingly well, the gameplay is the snappy and precise Tetris we know and love, and the different collaborations for new themes and music is a great touch that makes the game interesting enough to fire up again every once in a while instead of some other version of Tetris. The two major problems are that
1. You barely get anything in regards to tangible rewarding if you don't place 1st or at least the top 5-10, and
2. Almost everything aside from the game's main mode is paywalled behind a 10€ DLC. I'm not getting that, I'd rather get a full Tetris game on sale for that money!
A solid game to try out if you have Switch Online though, it can't hurt either.

great game! always fun to come back to sometimes and the DLC is great definitely worth it. It can be a bit frustrating sometimes getting a ton of garbage right at the start but I have gotten better. Only thing is I wish the themes didn't cost so many tickets, plus that all the special event themes would be available to buy. At least it encourages you to play more often and complete the daily missions.
I love Tetris, but this game has flashing lights and no accessibility options to disable them that I am aware of. 1 star for making it impossible for people with epilepsy, light sensitivity, sensory issues, etc. to enjoy free Tetris on the Switch… Please correct me if I’m wrong, though; I would LOVE to play this game WITHOUT the flashing lights. PLEASE. I have been waiting for years.
I've spent so many hours on this game. Getting first place is incredibly difficult and I got my first win after over 100 games. I do wish it had some sort of guide/instructions because I remember being confused when I first started playing. Like I know how Tetris works but I wasn't familiar with sending trash blocks or the K.O. power meter. I don't even know why this game is so addicting for me but it is.
