Substantial improvement over the first in nearly every way. I actually felt compelled to get every collectable and upgrade which didn't happen in the first one. Having actual boss fights made any upgrades felt more rewarding as you were building up to something that would test many of your abilities as oppose to only having chase sequences. If the first game didn't convince you I'd highly recommend giving the sequel a chance.
