This game is the most "I love this game, BUT..." game I've played. The controls can make the game literally unplayable for certain people. It sucks that's the case, yet I also can't stress enough that there are reasons for this. If you can adjust to them you'll find yourself shooting with such precision that is only exceeded by a mouse (and perhaps gyro or the wii remote). And when you get to that point you'll find a tightly designed, linear, arcade-esque third person shooter. Short chapters with incredible set pieces and challenges at every turn. The high variety of enemies and its expansive difficulty system make this insanely fun to replay to earn new random weapons in order to tackle even higher difficulties.
It also does the Nintendo "Died a lot? Here we'll make this easier" thing in a interesting way by automatically reducing the difficulty on death, but it keeps track of what difficulty you beat each chapter on. This means in order to beat each chapter on the highest difficulty you have to beat the whole chapter without dying once, and this game is absolutely brutal on 9.0. Yet it's an incredible thrill, often beating a level on 9.0 made me finally take a sigh of relief and feel incredibly accomplished. Even if you find 9.0 way too much, you can always freely adjust the difficulty to find one that suits you perfectly (I personally like 6.0 - 7.0 as a base difficulty).
The story and characters are also far more likeable then you'd initially think. Even delving into some surprisingly dark territory for only a E 10+ game. It also helps that there's very little interrupted time dedicated to story, often having it in the middle of gameplay. Makes the replayabilty even higher (with some annoying exceptions though).
It always sucks when a special game like this comes with some big hurdles for some people, but if you can get past those then it is absolutely worth it. It even has highly customizable controls, which is especially appreciated for this game (though should honestly be standard in every game).
