I got to get the hot take out right now. This game is more fun then Ninja Gaiden for me. Natsume was one of the best 3rd party devs of the time of NES and SNES for me personally and this is one of their better titles.

Shadow of the Ninja is a 2D action game that even has co-op. It's got a total of 5 main stages that are divided into sections. It's got two different weapons to use though I personally prefer the move that's a long chain. There's also projectiles to get and even a screen clearing move though please don't use it, it's really not worth it.

There's some good level design here though I don't really enjoy some of the enemies. This is really my only gripe with the game, some of them just are annoying unless you can abuse some tricks to cheese them. They also take a lot of hits too. Even bosses have a ton health, the health bar practically lies about how much health they really have. Other than that though this can be a fun time that's not too challenging.

The game also looks nice for 1990 and the music is your usual Natsume quality. The sprite art isn't the most interesting of the era but it gets the job done. I do wish the game tried to do more cutscenes outside of the beginning and end but eh what you gonna do.

The game is fun and I could see myself replaying it someday, it's not a game you want to miss though be warned it has limtied continues so don't get too frustrated. You can even use save states if you like, I won't judge. It's some good Ninja action on your NES!

Before I go I'd like to give some trivia on this game. This game would get a sequel but oddly enough it used the Ninja Gaiden IP for it. It was called Ninja Gaiden Shadow. Another interesting thing involves just Japan's release "Kage" The game didn't actually do too well back in the day meaning its one of the pricier Famicom games but what's worse is the game never gets ported there for some reason which makes a lot of them unhappy. I do wonder if there's some unknown issue but then again, SCAT aka Final Mission never gets brought there either. Maybe Natsume has something against Japan.
