If I were reductive, I would say that Spike Out is a somehow more shallow version of the Tekken Force mode they throw in random Tekken games. If I'm not reductive, Spike Out is a relatively crunchy beat 'em up with great sound design, trying its best to figure out how to be a 3D beat 'em up in 1998. When you get the timing down to properly air juggle someone, it does feel pretty nice, and the fact that Spike carries a child on his back the entire time that Mega Kangaskhan's himself off of you to help with fighting is really quite fun. However, as the game lacks any sort of defensive utility, and the game's solution to difficulty is "throw a bunch of dudes at you in a 3D space where you can only effectively counter in one direction", the game boils down to less of any sort of skill and more a war of attrition. There is some delightful ham to be had here, and the part where I beat all of The Undertaker's acolytes, only for a giant heaven stage to open up and a fancy heaven man with a rapier said "welcome to Hell" despite clearly being in heaven was cool, but the title is ultimately coasting on its crunchy arcade feel more than anything. It lacks the nuance of something like Streets of Rage 2 or Final Fight wherein skill with positioning or defensive options open up a world of optimization, but it's a neat enough relic if you just like mashing out a satisfying-feeling six string that combos into a double hit launcher.

In this DLC you go in Krieg's mind because Tannis thinks that all psycho's have a "Vaulthalla" in their brains full of loot. To get to this Vault, you kind of have to do a Psychonauts-esque dive through Krieg's mind, guided by his "Insane Side" and his "Sane Side". There are 3 maps you run through, one that explores Krieg not really feeling like he belongs with the Crimson Raiders and everyone else doesn't like him (they do), one that explores his love(?) for Maya and trying to reconcile the fact that she is gone, and the last one deals with the trauma endured from inhumane science experiments that turned him into a "Psycho". I liked how these were handled just because the voice actor for Krieg really fucking nailed it. "Sane Krieg" has such a soft, warm voice that really makes you connect with him. Whatever affection he has for Maya is really, really sold on the VO work here and probably makes me feel the most emotions a Borderlands game could make me feel. It also ends with you defeated a giant personification of his bloodlust and the 2 versions of Krieg fusing into one in a also touching cutscene.

Not a lot of content I guess, still took me and friends like 4 and a half hours (way longer than we were expecting), but I think the characters are dope and the music is way more memorable than the base game music which was basically nonexistent.

This game is FUCKING CRAZY. I was skeptical over whether they'd top Sky the 3rd yet they somehow did.

I don't know how they did it, they somehow made three back-to-back 5-star, 10/10 games. This has NEVER happened to me in another series, even my favourites.

It's extremely emotional, the artstyle is awesome, it's fun to play (the small gameplay additions compared to Zero are appreciated), the characters are all awesome, they throw so many twists at you, the likes of which I haven't been this affected by since finishing my top 10 favourites across all media, that you can't help but binge. The backtracking is some of the least tedious in the entire genre from what I've seen. This is one of the closest things I've seen to perfection, from concept to execution, in my life. My only actual complaint is that the difficulty curve is kind of unreasonable in the last few fights of the game, but who cares, it was really hype.

And oh my GOD, the music... Trails already secured its place as #1 in terms of OST, beating Umineko, but this is on a whole other level. You have so many bangers, like the Azure Arbitrator or Mystic Core, but they're far from the only ones.

In terms of favourites, I'd place it around Utawarerumono 3. It's just that good.

I will be slowing down with my Trails binging and going through Cold Steel at a more leisurely pace so that I don't burn out but... wow, I'm definitely a fan.
