An excellent revitalisation of an otherwise polarising shooter in Id's pedigree. Quake 2 itself maintains Id's classic run and gun gameplay but with some weightiness of modern shooters with longer weapon swap times, slower movement, and an increasing abundance of hitscan-type enemies. The hubs are complex and objectives can be a bit more vague than the typical key-grabbing affair of previous Id games, but there's a charm to Quake 2's grungy late-90s sci-fi aesthetic and soundtrack. The two expansions included are certainly more of the same and a bit weaker, with some questionable additions like turrets and abundant monster closets. Fortunately the new 2023 Call of the Machine levels by Machine Games are superb with incredible map variety and fun set piece moments for its 3 hour runtime. The remaster runs very smooth, supports controllers fairly seamlessly, and includes lots of effects to make it look as modern or retro as you'd like it to, and it throws in the Quake 2 64 levels as a bonus as well. Well worth its value, and definitely worth a check if you like retro shooters, even if there's more influential ones than this.
