One of the last games on the OG famicom, Adventure Island IV takes heavy inspiration from the likes of Metroid. Not nearly as creative as that title, but it remains a breezy, colorful swan song for one of the best consoles of all time.

Super fast-paced, Adventure Island takes Super Mario Bros ethos of platformer as obstacle course and runs with it. Deaths are painful due to having to power up again (and you WILL want to be fully powered up), but the game has an addictive "one more try" quality that makes it a strong showing for 1986 despite its faults.

A bit janky, but endlessly creative in its use of colorful viscera-packed stages. The pulsing environments and twitching eyeballs give it a leg up on Lifeforce in terms of commitment to aesthetics.
