El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron
El Shaddai is an intense visual treat, just a near-constant stream of "Wow, that is gorgeous."
Unfortunately this does have an impact on the platforming between the fixed camera and the very particularly pretty patterns that overlay everything; however, the platforming is pretty light for the most part so in the end it doesn't feel too bad to me. (Author's Note: I enjoy the later platforming challenges of Wario World.) One particular exception goes to a chapter that has this pattern overlay effect that's way more intense and does become harder to read.
It's also very dedicated to not having a UI at all, which makes Uriel's Blessing hard to predict when it would come up, but generally isn't too bothersome. Clothing represents HP so despite enemies and bosses feeling a bit too tanky at times you do still get to see progress made in fights, with the big boss fights being an exception but they still have a health indicator anyway.
Combat is mostly very simple, which I think may be preferable in a game where the visual experience is much more heavily weighted.
Story-wise, it is certainly incomplete and harder to follow in the later parts of the game. Enoch being a silent protagonist probably doesn't help this either, although I think the story is easy enough to follow until the later chapters where the game has to rush a bit.
Even with these pacing issues, though, several moments easily speak for themselves and have at the very least some incredible cool-factor. Particular shout-outs to Ishtar, who is otherwise very underdeveloped but her appeal comes across regardless.
The remaster also comes with a digital novel and artbook, which I will get around to reading and I'll probably comment my thoughts on.
Overall, it's really hard to not love this game. There's an intense passion behind it that I think comes across even with just playing El Shaddai alone.
