I believe Virgo Versus The Zodiac deserves some praise by virtue of being one of the few games that tries, and succeeds, in emulating the feel of the timed button prompts from the Mario & Luigi series. This iteration of the mechanic is different and has less variance since the player is afforded ample time to decrease damage and avoid a debuff, but one can never completely avoid being harmed.
A large emphasis is also placed on defensive abilities, particularly different versions of a slowly depleting shield that usually comes with a buff and, more importantly, the ability to counter enemy attacks for as long as the shield stays up, so it grants both protection and additional damage at the same time. Furthermore, counters cannot be countered back so there's little reason not to rise the shield every time it's off cool down.
I think the mechanics and encounters are generally well thought out, although the difficulty curve suffers a bit from this as early encounters draw on forever and the first boss in particular is possibly the hardest fight in the entire game as a result. Perhaps this was done on purpose to incentivize players to visit black holes in order to grind, but I don't think that was a good idea because of how easy the rest of the game is. It would be a shame if people dropped the game during the first hour because they expected the entire game to require farming exp and money.
Possibly the second most important aspect after the gameplay is the writing, as there is a lot of it, not only in the form of dialogue, but many miscellaneous objects in the game come with a "quirky" description as well. On top of that there are 3 different endings (and a fourth one that is really just an extension to one of them) with different exclusive story sequences.
I've got to say that I'm not the biggest fan of the writing, a lot of it could fit in nicely on old school Tumblr like most of the major characters being all mighty lesbians that often digress from what seems to be serious conversations to tell purposely lame jokes.
I have bigger issues with the story though, like how, if you check the achievements, the most commonly obtained ending is the Fixed one. Without going into spoilers, I think that's because it's not clear which of the alternatives in the second important choice of the game will result on a key character's death because otherwise one would get the Cardinal ending, which I think is what most players probably go for in their first playthrough, and that seems like a serious issue to me that players can screw themselves over without even knowing until several hours later.
Also, alpacas aren't as cute as people in the internet think. I'm from South America and even own several clothing items made out of alpaca wool so I have nothing against them, there's no mistaking that they are fluffy and such. However, they smell like any other barn animal and spit as a defense mechanism.
On a different note, I think the presentation is really nice. The sprites have fluid animations and the music is good, I specially like how most cutscenes represent the current color scheme of the player character rather than switching to the default one. I also find some character designs to be kind of cool, but that's a more subjective topic.
To conclude, I believe that Virgo Versus The Zodiac is a solid game, the gameplay and presentation are pretty good, and the writing manages to be ambitious, despite its problems. I don't think I have it in me to get all the endings since there's no NG+, but I'm happy with my experience overall.
