Ys Origin is a fast paced action game. There are experience points and such, but the game is not much of an RPG besides that, most of your progress depends on skill and exploration. It's hard to describe how solid everything feels, the gameplay is very good and each character has a distinct playstyle and a slightly different story, encouraging replays. You should at least replay the game once with the unlockable character to fight the true final boss and see the true ending.
The story and setting are mostly aimed to set up the events of Ys I and II which take place 700 years later so, apart from being an enjoyable game on its own right, Ys Origin also introduces a lot of interesting lore and such about the Ys world for those who are interested.
The music is very good (as it is expected from this series) and I think the art style is very nice. There are many, many ports of the Ys games so I can't say for sure that this is the definitive version or anything like that, but since this one runs on PC you can do stuff like remap the controls on a gamepad or play with mouse and keyboard if you wish.
There's also an unlockable boss rush and arena modes after beating the story which are fun, but I think you'd have to be insane to actually unlock everything and I'm one of those crazy people who plays on nightmare difficulty.
Overall, this game is excellent and I wouldn't mind recommending it to pretty much anyone.
