After years upon years of picking up, playing it, and dropping it. I finally finished Hollow Knight and…I see why people in this community just…adore this game so much, cherish it, and how it can be so special for many people that even me trying to do this review would be undermining how fucking fantastic this game is.

Hollow Knight is easily one of the best Metroidvanias I’ve played. If it weren’t for my bias and personal preference of the Metroid series, I can say that this is the best of its genre.
There’s so many reasons why, for example, the combat. While it may seem simple at first glance, the combat in Hollow Knight is fantastic and what pushes this further is its bosses. The boss fights in this game are without a shadow of a doubt some of my favorite parts of the whole game, out of most games that i have played, this is the one game where i felt like i had to have my full attention and focus on them they’re all have something going for them (even if some are much better than others).

Exploring however, is mostly what you will do in this game. Hallownest is such a beautiful world that you explore in this game, i got to give props to team cherry for making a game this beautiful, its like an arstyle game concept you see online become a reality and it’s honestly fucking beautiful, like if you actually go and look at the background and what this world gives is just so good. Enemies, buildings, benches, even a place thats just ACTUAL SHIT looks fucking fantastic. They really nailed how characters look in this game, them having bug features like worms, spiders, and what not all look really well.

While the story is not told AT ALL, instead it gives off its story through environmental storytelling. And let me tell you having a beautiful world like this AND having its story told through its environment, they are geniuses for that. The story is nothing to worry about if you are going in this game but getting into the lore is so worth it (ESPECIALLY FOR THAT FINAL BOSS IT’S LEGIT ONE OF THE BEST FINAL BOSSES FROM A STORY PERSPECTIVE).

Overall I think Hollow Knight is just perfect, the only thing that can be a turn off is that its early game is really slow and you can get lost a lot easily. Even though I've played my fair share of Metroidvanias, I was lost a lot of the time and just didn’t know how to progress. I had to play it with someone guiding but that was honestly fine with me and didn’t ruin the experience for me, whether you push through or not; I can guarantee you that you’ll have a blast with this game.
