You might scratch your head at this, but I think E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial should be on here without a doubt. It was a horrible game, undoubtedly one of the worst of all time, but it's failure acted as a catalyst that led to the death of Atari as a power in the games industry (as much as they tried to claw it back afterwards) and basically razed the industry to the ground, clearing the runway for Nintendo to usurp their throne and ship the NES (and Super Mario Bros.) internationally effectively uncontested, which quite literally became the foundational bedrock to the entire home console gaming industry as we know it. Without E.T: Nintendo vs Sega wouldn't have happened, as it would be Atari vs Nintendo (assuming Nintendo still tried to ship internationally if Atari was still a competitor); the PlayStation wouldn't have been created, and probably the Xbox as well; and nearly every home console game in this list made after 1982 would either be fundamentally different, or not even exist to begin with. All because some execs wanted a tie-in game shipped for Christmas...
