Dark Souls 2 was the victim of a troubled development cycle that resulted in major graphical downgrades, mechanical sloppiness, and ultimately the frantic developers having to staple together the levels they had just to get the game out the door.

The result is a game that both strays too far from its predecessor, in terms of the illogical world design, annoying spams and ambushes, and lackluster bosses. But at the same time attempts to ape Dark Souls 1 with a recycled story and attempts to play it safe to avoid trampling on the original.

I have no idea who started the mythology that now seems surround discourse on this game, chiefly the false ideas DS2 "tried to do something different", or "had the best story of the series". DS2 is not the first game crippled by a hellish development cycle, and certainly won't be the last. But all the little paper cuts of annoying and sloppy design create grievous wounds make this easily the worst Soulsborne title
