In the context of 1999: to me this was the perfect rental game. Chill out with some pokemon for a weekend and snap some pictures.

In the context of 2022: an excellent way to "collect them all" (well I think 69 of them anyway) that doesn't involve the repetitive JRPG aspects of the main series. You play the courses over and over but there are different ways to interact with the pokemon and secrets to find. Some of the UI is pretty crummy but it can be forgiven for 1999 standards. This is a cool, unique game and I'd love to see Nintendo execute some more interesting ideas like this.
