Never got around to the original, but I really like the look of the remake--the graphics are absolutely stunning! Playing this after the Dark Souls trilogy feels a little like putting the training wheels back on. There were a few challenging sections, but it is largely much easier than those games. Still, it has a lot of the great hallmarks of FromSoftware's best work. It's a worthy precursor to what came out of it!
