as someone who still needs to finish FF7 OG (i was like 1/3 of the way through it before I decided to play this), this game is So Fucking Good and also did way better at capturing my interest ngl.

I think the pacing (and writing and also how well I was able to follow it) kinda fell off at the final stretch, but everything outside of that was great in my eyes. The Midgar expansion really helped make characters that had less than 20 minutes total of screentime in the OG more memorable, plus adding new/technically new ones like Roche and Leslie that I thought were pretty cool. It helps that the voice actors all did great jobs, both with the main characters (special shoutout to Barret my GOAT) and side-characters.

The gameplay felt like a pretty natural evolution of the ATB system, and it really clicked for me. Each character also felt pretty nice to play - by the end of it (including Intergrade), I think my favorite playstyle was probably Yuffie or Tifa while my least favorite ended up being Aerith just because I didn't really build her that well. Upgrading weapons did like a bit of a slog though: select a weapon, sit through the animation, upgrade stuff, sit through the animation again as you go back to the menu, repeat in order to upgrade other weapons while still deciding which one you want to actually stick with.

The soundtrack is amazing, with a special shoutout to Collapsed Expressway's songs, Hollow, and the Happy Turtle songs in Intergrade. Some of the direct remakes fall a bit flat compared to their originals, but that's the only negative thing I can say about the music.

The Intermission side story present in Intergrade was pretty good. I think it could've done with a bit more that wasn't just "time for you to fight waves of enemies for a bit" and expanding the Nero/Weiss story a bit more (assuming they don't plan to tackle either in future Remake installments), but it was an overall fun time and the ending hit even if one plot beat was pretty expected.

no clue what happens in Rebirth or the eventual part 3, but I am down to let Nomura/Kitase/whoever cook.
