It's a very technically impressive game and the port of it to PC is the best I've seen in years (though that might be more of a dig at other studios rather than an inherent compliment), but it's ultimately just fine.

The things I usually expect from an R&C title is unique guns, funny dialogue or cutscenes, and cool puzzles. With this criteria, Rift Apart only manages to fulfill one and a half of them because the guns are fun; the puzzles are also good as well, especially the side content that involves exploration, but it's bogged down by the fact none of the protagonists shut up when you try to solve them.

The main confusing thing I find about it is who it tries to appeal to: most of its plot is centered around details that only make sense or are important to returning players who would find the game's direction much safer than every other entry in the series, but those same returning players would find the new direction at least boring by comparison.
