In the history of turn-based combat, there is nothing duller or more nonsensical than watching so-called heroes passively absorb consumable spells from clueless enemies. And the story reads like it was written by a talentless high schooler. An embarrassing sequel that unfortunately has inspired a number of juvenile, awkwardly complex JRPGs.

bro is wild if he thinks this inspired other games
He absolutely loves tossing in some completely ahistorical little tag like that seemingly without thinking it through at all, one of his favorite moves

All of you are fools. You ask for a game that was inspired by FF8? It is truly simple. It is none other than Celeste. Another classic by Jebediah, I kneel!
I take it figuring out Adel's gender caused you great consternation with this one too, huh?
Normally, I wouldn't put the burden of proof on someone just subjectively reviewing video games, but since you write with so much assumed authority and state everything as matter-of-fact, I'm just going to ask: can you even name another JRPG- or even another game in general- that followed in the vein of FFVIII? What kind of design trend are you implying this inspired in the industry outside of a desire to go back to the 'old formula?'
Part of why I ask is because VIII isn't even similar to other FF games due to the Draw and Junction systems. It's like comparing Postal 1 and 2, or the first Pac-Man and The New Adventures, or you and an actual video-game-retrospective author like Jeremy Parish. Frankly, it sounds like you're talking out of your ass- being a critic doesn't actually necessitate being obtusely contrarian.
I give your review 1/5 stars. Apply yourself next time.

My favorite is him using a Darkstalkers review to rail against fighting game culture for embracing the definitely very new and modern marketing gimmick of crossover characters, presumably not knowing what The King of Fighters is
