HENSHIN A GO GO BABY!!! (holy shit these catchphrases are really catchy)

not gonna lie... i wasn't sure if i'd give this a 9 or 10, because yeah, it share the same problems with the others kamiya games i've played (devil may cry and bayonetta) but fuck me, what a game. every high point i was smiling. every fucking juggle i was happy. this shit is not real. kamiya was into some crazy shit while doing this game i swear...

i can't even review this game properly because
1. i didn't watch any tokusatsu (yet)
2. i just beat the game

but i can firmly say that this shit is the pure epitome of modernized beat em ups genre that still holds up today with some titles like Devil May Cry 5, Bayonetta 3 and Hi-Fi Rush.

it was the creator of the "verse" system where every encounter is ranked, has a LOT of juggles, it's an over the top adventure with a cool and cuhrayzee protagonist, it reiterates the arcade structure with a lot of extra content and replay value, and some authorship stuff like its gimmicky nature with slowmo mechanic + general design approach where every space, mechanic, enemy and environment unit is interactive, like a playground. mostly kamiya and clover/platinum games shit but STILL, it sums up to one of the most unique games ever.

i also want to add that Viewtiful Joe with its simple job of being a 2D game is wonderfully accomplished - it's fascinanting how every move, mechanic and frame of every single fight is so intuitive that even my grandma could feel the kinesthesis of deliberately juggle the enemies in a stylish manner.

if Devil May Cry is the father of modern beat em ups, Viewtiful Joe would be the uncle. that's right. the fucking uncle. why? because no one remembers the uncle, it's 2D, and most of Viewtiful Joe innovations are revisions of what came before in DMC1.

Hideki Kamiya was casually creating, shaping and modernizing genres and parameters by just being a hell of a creative game developer and that's what I most respect about him -- even with the most stupid shmup minigames, puzzles, environmental hazards and gimmicky shit you've ever seen... he's still one of the most unique auteurs of all time. (and yes i'm blocked on twitter)

The Wonderful 101 is the next one and I have... quite of high hopes for it. Everyone loves a hero, right?
