I had a more enjoyable time with this one compared to the first one but I think I preferred the special stages of 1 better. Tails makes the last couple hard to do but I managed somehow.

@CDX I was playing the original so I don't think there was an option to play without Tails. Or maybe I just missed that? Could have sworn that feature was only in later releases after 3.
There is the option on the Mega Drive original but it's super hidden. lol I discovered only as an adult, many years later.
On the title screen (where you choose between 1 player or versus) you can go to Options and there you will find a config to change "Sonic And Tails" to "Sonic Alone" or "Tails Alone".
