Art Style Downgrades IMO

Holding myself back from whinging about remasters and trying to keep it to genuine differences in aesthetic choices

Not saying the art in 1 was necessarily better but they were definitely unique and pretty iconic. The portraits and sprite art are the most memorable things about the game tbh (and the blood geysers lmao) and really carry a pretty average srpg.
Would've liked an evolution of 1's art style rather than ditching it for the nice but kinda forgettable look of 2

I still don't understand why they changed it. The intent was to make the characters look older, more serious and realistic i guess but they're pretty bland looking to me.
Idk why more realism was the direction they took and stuck with for the rest of the series when the portraits in 1 are so bold and expressive. Its a look that worked a lot better for 16bit gba too, 2's portraits really just blend in now that they dont have the strong lines. The cartoony look seemed a better fit for the games anyway with the "war but low stakes and goofy" vibe they revolved around.

Opposite problem to advance wars lmao. Went from Ayami Kojima's sleek etherial gothic to slice of life anime.

When people praise Morrowinds visuals its almost always about how uniquely alien and well realised the setting is which I completely agree with but I don't the actual style itself gets enough credit. The games before it have that 80s smutty pulp fantasy look and the games after it have that attempt at realistic visuals and grounded designs. Morrowind feels like the only one that had an original art style designed for it. The characters are angular and exaggerated WIP
