For starters, I should say that traditional Soulslike games have never really appealed to me. It's mainly the gameplay, which I find awkward, sluggish, and boring. However, for some reason, I bought Lies of P hoping that it would break this anti-Soulsike curse I have. Unfortunately it did not. I don't think there's anything "wrong" with this game, it may even be a really good soulslike. It's just one of those things; I wish I could like it so I could be a part of it with everyone else, but I just can't.

I think the design of it is wonderful and it captured my imagination with it's aesthetic and world design. In fact, the look of the game is what sold me on it to begin with. The character designs and the setting were impressively well realized. The art direction was on point, consistent, and enchanting. These are the biggest positive things I can say about this game. I think it's impressive that a small indie studio was able to craft something so big.

I pride myself on my ability to be able to enjoy any good game regardless of budget, genre, or time of release. But the one genre I just can't seem to get into is the Soulslike. The only one I've legitimately enjoyed was Kena: Bridge of Spirits and I'm not sure if that's even considered a Soulsike by fans of the genre. Ahh well. Next time I'll resist the urge to buy the pretty Soulslike so I don't dilute the review pool with my distaste of the genre.

Overall I definitely see why this game is beloved by fans of the genre, but even a great design and good atmosphere isn't enough to break me from my dislike of Soulslikes. This is the unfortunate life I live.

I be interested to hear what you found so unappealing about Lies of Ps combat. Its tottaly fine if someone doesnt like the typical Soulslike gameplay but Lies does stray far enough from that formula imo. I think its quiet a bit more proactive and fun than other games of this type.

@NovaNiles It's hard to put into words. I think a big factor is I prefer faster paced combat when I'm playing a 3rd person; something like Ghost of Tsushima, for example, appeals to me more. There were also an overwhelming amount of stats, which would be okay but the game doesn't give you an easy way to find descriptions for what each one does. And also, more importantly to me, I don't care for the Souslike tropes of respawning enemies whenever you take a rest or how punishing dying is (although I hear this game isn't even as bad with that).

@PapaJaeger I see what you mean. Stat wise Its not all too complicated tbh. The game just follows the trop of feeling the need to rename everything instead of just telling you straight what everything is, wich I something i dont care for aswell. All you really need to know is that Motivity = Strength, Technique = Dexterity and Advance = Special Weapons/Magic basicly. Then you just look at the letter grad your choosen weapon has, S beeing the highest and D beeing the lowest, and pair it with whatever stat you prefer to build your character on. There is really not much more to it. I also think the game is generally pretty fast paced and it encourages you to be very agressive. Respawing enemies are of course a thing but the game is so linear and has so many checkpoints that I dont even think that matters much and dying really isnt punished at all. Unlike in Dark Souls you dont even lose all your xp when die more than once, you just lose a little each time and are allowed to try multiple times before it hits 0.

If traditional souls games don't appeal to you, there is a very good chance you weren't gonna like this game

@DoctorIssa I was hoping a good Soulslike made by a new developer with a fresh take might help get me into it. But yeah, unfortunately, this genre just isn't for me.
