The aesthetics and cookie-clicker upgrade system of a mid 2000's flash game, but with enough depth and metagame considerations for it to exist in this era.

Not only is this a lovingly made, highly detailed, beautiful peice of art, but also a intriguing mystery that had me playing for hours in a row without noticing. I was slightly concerned that this would be a bit dry and stuffy (although I was still down for the ride) but my worries were unfounded. A true masterpeice of interactive fiction, it's exciting, contemplative, mundane, grand, emotional and intellectual.

Portraying a historical period 'accurately' is such a vague idea that it becomes almost impossible. But it's hard to think of a better way of handling it than how it is done in Pentiment. Not only does the story itself deal with how history is recorded and recounted, but the game covers almost every aspect of the time it depicts. It covers daily life for peasants, barons and monks, we see how for even in a small rural town in the 16th century there are dozens of different cultures that have influenced what they do, the way they speak, what they pray to and the very stones that the town is made from. History, and also people are always more complicated than we think, no place, person or peice of art exists in a vaccum. Everything is influenced by everything else

Playing Pentiment has been like a breath of fresh air, a reminder of what can be done with videogames, a reminder that genuine passion and creativity is still thriving in the industry.

Amen.
