As a game I initially was slated to give Alone in the Dark a 7 out of 10: rough around the edges and often somehow simultaneously cryptic and linear but otherwise a fun little survival horror adventure that captures the atmosphere of the 1992 classic. After playing through as Carnby and getting his "normal ending", I was thoroughly satisfied and ready to start a new playthrough with Emily.

However, where the game is let down entirely is the fact that its replayability functions within 10% new content and 90% having to play exactly the same game all over again. Emily gets new dialogue with characters she's familiar with and a single new area in Chapter 4, yet if you want to see the true ending you have to not only trudge through the same 8-12 hour game again but also collect a specifc set of collectables while you do it.

Once I found all of this out, I threw in the towel at Emily's Chapter 3. I don't care to see a single new area, nor do I like the idea of a very specifc series of events that require specifc items, just to unlock 5 endings, two of which require effort to see each characters "bad endings". After reading what the "true" ending entails, I think I prefer Carnby's normal ending anyway.
