Games Finished In 2020

My first year of dedicated gaming :)

Max Payne
Max Payne
Ah yes, the crowning jewel of the list. Despite my love for Spider-Man, and his great game on the ps1… he just couldn’t quite cut it like Max Payne.

It’s pulpy, over the top, cheesy, dark, sad, beautiful, chaotic, and brilliant. I love it through and through. Its jankiness is also a factor of its charm. Its limitations somehow add to its experience.

Sam Lake and his team really poured their passion into this game, and it’s felt in every texture, every level, every line of dialogue, every minute. Maybe too much praise… but it was truly of labor of love that I can appreciate.

Spider-Man
Spider-Man
The first spider-man on the ps1 was a game I bought as a teen and beat as an adult. I never had a memory card for my ps1 as a teen.

So I was never able to finish the game. But becoming a retro gamer now that I’m older has allowed me to return to the games I always wanted to play through. The first game is as perfect of a Spider-Man game as they come.

It does everything I would like a Spider-Man game to do. And it also controls really well for the ps1! Some levels spike in difficulty… but it’s so worth it. It’s such a fun game with some awesome Collectables and Easter eggs. But it gets the spirit of the character right, and that’s all I could ask for going back to it.

Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro
Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro
Spider-Man 2 is a great Spider-Man game, and just like the first, a great ps1 game. It’s not quite as unique or exciting as the first game, as it’s basically just a continuation/copy of the original with some new antagonists. But that’s also what’s great about it.

It doesn’t do a whole lot of new stuff, and it works because it has all of the things I loved the first time around. Though it would’ve been nice to see some new gameplay mechanics or a fresh story.

Spider-Man was a game from my childhood. Probably the one I played most growing up. It was my favorite film, so naturally this became my favorite game.

It was one that was just how I remembered it growing up. I had a lot of fun playing through it. But all that said, it’s not a great game. Loads of fun for fans of the movie and character though!

Mission: Impossible
Mission: Impossible
By todays standards, this does not hold up very well at all. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about this game every once in a while.

Some levels are so cool. I loved the recreation of the iconic scene where you’re being repelled. It’s really good. And the level where you’re at the party as a waiter is another great one. And of course, the ending where you’re shredding things to the pieces.

Though it’s incredibly flawed, it has things I’m fond about on reflection. A perfect mess of a game.
