Spider-Man Games Ranked

My entire childhood revisited. Some new additions I had never played before are also included.

Marvel's Spider-Man
Marvel's Spider-Man
The definitive Spider-Man storytelling experience.

It captures the best qualities of the character, his world, and his story. Even with the spectacle, maintains the simple aspects that work about the hero at its core... and the gameplay is sharp as hell, and fun as hell.

It feels like a game tailored to me. And that's what insomniac does so well. They know what we want, and they create such personal and intimate stories for fans of this character.

It's beautiful.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
As an expansion, I think it's brilliant. Probably the smartest approach they could have taken to setting up the sequel.

Not only was this a great way to satisfy fans anxious for more, but it was a fantastic introduction to a new protagonist. All while maintaining the pristine level of storytelling you'd come to expect by this point.

New mechanics keep the gameplay refreshing, a giant suit selection adds to the fun, and a cozy Christmas vibe gives it that replay ability factor, making it a comfort game.

I love it.

Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man 2
The one that started the formula for the rest to follow!

The swinging is still fantastic. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking otherwise. Even me.

The level design is top tier. Boss fights are a blast. Story is okay... has its issues. But there's so many little details in game that make it so special.

Being in this world is exciting. It feels like you're in the movie. The music really sells it.

There's a reason this game still receives so much praise today. It's a ton of fun!

This perfectly captures the era it came out, and the lighter spirit of the comic book character. There's so many little easter eggs and details that are a blast to discover.

Fantastic boss battles, fantastic level design, and an awesome little story. It's so much fun.

Ultimate Spider-Man

While I think some people might hype this up just a bit too much, I cannot deny the aspects that work.

Getting to play as Spider-Man and Venom is a treat. Especially because both combat mechanic's rule. The cell-shaded art style is immaculate, and the open world is so vibrant and exciting to traverse.

The web swinging is actually pretty awesome too. Getting to climb your Webline mid-swing was awesome.

The boss fights can reallllly test your patience though. Like, wow.

It's a gnarly experience. One I won't soon forget.

Marvel's Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps
Marvel's Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps
I almost didn’t include this considering it’s just the DLC’s… but since it’s in a bundle and it’s one continuous story, it felt appropriate enough to add in.

The first chapter “The Heist” is decent.
It works as an introduction to this new story, and there’s some memorable moments throughout.

Chapter Two “Turf Wars” has some good moments as well. I especially like what they do with Yuri. I do think hammer head getting a power suit kind of nerf’s the character a bit. That’s when the story begins to jump the shark a little.

Chapter Three “Silver Lining”, has some of my favorite and least favorite aspects of the story. It’s the most grandiose of the content, but also the messiest. It’s still a blast nonetheless.

If you view all 3 DLC's as a contained Spider-Man story, it's the weakest of the newest games... but an incredible little storytelling experience either way.

7

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
This is such a special game. The story is awesome... and the art styles and villains are so exciting. Every cutscene is so satisfying.

It was the first instance of a Spider-Man game feeling like you're watching a movie, or a show unfold with its storytelling.

The gameplay can get pretty repetitive... but its storytelling consistently reels you in throughout.

Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro
Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro
I love these early games. It cuts out all of the bs and doubles down on all of the things you should include in a spider-man game.

Its linearity is never a hinderance, its puzzles are fun, its boss fights rock, and it has all of the elements that worked in the first entry back again.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
What a frustrating entry.

So. Much. Untapped. Potential.
The story is decent. It has aspects that work. There are some really memorable boss fights all throughout, and the black suit combat hits. So does the wall fighting.

The game loses significant steam by the end, which is a real bummer. But none-the-less, it's still a fun, contained spider-man experience overall.

Yes is has the suit selection. And it's wonderful.

It's a linear experience, but that never hinders it. The boss battles are pretty fun, and man those cutscenes kick ass.

Such memorable level design... and the music from the film is a welcome addition. The 2000s edge really gives it some good nostalgic vibes as well.

It's still a true gem. Even if it isn't quite on par with others in this list.

11

The Amazing Spider-Man
The Amazing Spider-Man
It's got its own set of issues, but it's a more tonally, and narratively consistent game than its sequel.

I also like how it serves as a sequel to the movie in its own right. The story isn't all that bad. It's a fun concept for a plot with a clear central antagonist.

The swinging can be nauseating, and certain combat sections can get frustrating, but some boss battles were fun, and of course the little easter eggs, and suit collecting were fun.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

This game often gets a lot of hate, and while I don't think it's all unwarranted, I can't deny that this is when the games on the list start becoming actual fun.

It's chock-ful of gameplay and narratiive issues... and it has moments that are hilariously bad.

But the collecting of suits is a blast, some of the level design is kind of fun, and a detail I often think back to is being able to play a mini game on the arcade machine inside of the comic shop. Sure, it's not a particularly fun one... but they didn't have to do anything like that at all. I'm just glad they did something.

13

Spider-Man 3
Spider-Man 3
The most awkward, empty, devoid of life open world Spider-Man game on the list.

It's story and gameplay are subpar, but as a fan of the films, it's still easy to get invested.

It has some memorable moments. But none that will make you want to return to it.

14

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe
Spider-Man: Friend or Foe
If you watch the opening animation, and play the first few levels, you might enjoy your time with this.

If you attempt to go any further, you'll begin to realize all of it's bigger issues.

It also doesn't have any other unique cutscenes outside of the opening, which could've made it more entertaining otherwise.

15

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows - Amazing Allies Edition
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows - Amazing Allies Edition
There's some mileage to get out of this experience as a Spider-Man fan. Emphasis on SOME.

Ultimately, it just winds up being a soulless little side-scroller that commits the cardinal sin of being a far less polished, and far worse port of a better game. As if it's anything like the game it's trying to be.
