You wanna know whats really crazy? Just think of how much is going on in MGS2 as a game. The AI systems, the complexity of mechanics, the variety of unique interactions, and even the quantity of random details. This game was made in 2001, why does it feel like games are somehow less impressive 20+ years later?

Metal Gear Solid 2 is relatively small in scope, able to fine tune its environments and mechanics accordingly. In modern day, there's an insistence that every AAA game be some massive adventure. Such longevity comes at the cost of polish.

Also MGS2 was something the developers actually wanted to make to communicate a strong didactic message, so that helps.

@MegaDriver69 I think that makes for a great case study tho right - how much has the push for the "Everything Game" really paid off if it feels like its equaling a worse experience?

And more to that point, how much more impressive could a smart and thrifty project like MGS2 be nowadays if it could leverage 20+ years of performance increases?

To me it paints a picture of a much, much more impressive game that everybodies too busy doing this other stuff to make.
