Impressive that this game exists, and manages to make the original game fairly accessible while feeling as though it remains faithful and representative of the original. As a result of that however, a lot of the frustrating aspects of the original remain. If you aren't using a walkthrough, you'll find yourself backtracking a lot, and digging through audio-logs trying to work out your next objective is, this wouldn't be so bad but the UI for the audio-logs is particularly unintuitive. It also shares the curse of many other immersive sims in that it falls apart at the end and the final 30 mins or so are very forgettable. Still, in terms of what Nightdive did with the remaster I have few complaints.

A downgrade from SS3 in almost every way, which itself was a downgrade from SS2E. The new features they added such as the open world segment and companions felt half-baked and added nothing to the game. The game somehow also looks worse than BFE which came out like 10 years ago. There were a few cool new weapon mods and the combat is still classic Sam so there is fun to be had.

First thing to note is just how much content they managed to pack into a £17 indie game. 35 hours in and I've only just finished the main story, and I reckon I'll get another 10 hours out of it easily. The gameplay loop itself has you spending most of the game time exploring the ocean and catching fish, any collectathon fans will love this segment as there's literally hundreds of fish/fauna to find and catalogue. Mirroring the exploration segment is a kind of management sim as you help run a Sushi Bar, using the fish caught to create unique dishes. Each segment is fleshed out enough to feel like a game in their own right, and the drip feeding of new content for both sections over the course of the game means they never feel stale.
Music is also excellent, beautiful graphics and the storyline and characters are both charming and often pretty funny.
