Extreme Meatpunks is a complicated game. It’s not complicated to play, though, as it combines visual novel passages with dodge n’ click, top-down brawling. That brawling is not exactly a strong point, although it’s occasionally oddly satisfying. Pulling of a dodge on with its… dodgy controls and then knocking a mech piloted by a fascist off a cliff makes for a solid moment. Similarly, the dialogue see-saws back and forth in tone and topic. Ultimately, I think those are nitpicks. The game as a whole is wild, fun, earnest, and very angry. It imagines an alternate reality, not only in-game but in terms of what games might be. I’ll be thinking about it for a while.
