this game gets really sold short just for not being as self serious as ff4 and not as grand as the series gets from 6 onward but it's a really spectacular game even outside of its stellar mechanics and practically outdoes ff4 in every way. definitely leans a bit more on comic relief than some people might like but there's some really great moments here and the cast is really strong, especially with galuf and bartz, and exdeath is undercut by fans for how interesting of an antagonist he is. neo exdeath is by far the coolest final boss design in this series to me other than safer sephiroth, and even if he's pretty stock standard on a surface level i think he deserves more credit as a villain. easily my favorite of the snes trilogy of final fantasy games and a game i can't recommend enough to fans of jrpgs

exdeath is one of the best series villains by far. it's insane to me that people complain about him being hammy and "i hid as a splinter!". like that shit is what makes him an all-timer

@averypaledog he is literally the goat nobody in the series does it like him

The symbolism in his exdeaths castle and the game overall are still some of the hardest things in the series but nobody gives exdeath OR galuf any credit and it’s extremely fucking tragic

FFV (and X) were the games that helped me get into the mainline titles, after IIIDS left me extremely cold and XIII somewhat jaded. Still in incredible disbelief very little people actively dive into the story and (meta)textual communication found within, since there's still a number in there that compel me than a good chunk of the moments in the games I've played thus far.

Also Bartz is one of the best protagonists in any RPG ever and I'll die on that hill. He's The Dude ever made.

bartz is a top 3 ff protagonist and its sad that he does not get as much credit as he should

Both FF 4 and 5 pull the obvious "oops we're out of map space so let's pull out a plot twist to extend the game" twice, but this does so in a far more interesting way than IV. Also, FF4's characters have these large scale character arcs that are cool but resolve fairly early in the story and the narrative loses steam a bit as a result. FFV doesn't have big obvious character arcs but has nice small character moments all the way through the game, fitting for a game whose central theme is friendship. Good stuff!

Full agree that Exdeath is slept on - such poise, such presence, such power.

genuinely such a charming FF entry! always nice to see it getting some love because it does seem to get overlooked sometimes.
