so many reviews of this game have people saying "oh it sucks but i love it" or "it's obviously not GOOD but it's good" which is The Coward's Copout. I have no respect for this line of hedging your bets for fans and people who hate it, especially since Sonic Adventure is good.

I am bold enough to say that Sonic Adventure IS a good game. It's creative, made with love and passion, and actually makes good on the no doubt stressful task of translating Sonic into 3D. Of course not everything is going to work, Sonic Team were just fucking nuts, and I have way more respect for a game that shoots for the sun than something that is just another product.

So enough with this "The game is bad but I like it" bullshit. I think for having no other template to work off of, the amount Sonic Team gets right here for technology of the 90s, is genuinely impressive and shouldn't be given backhanded compliments. Sonic Adventure deserves either your love or hate, not some shit in-between.

BASED BASED BASED BASED

And I think that point of having no template to work with prior is pretty on point. By 1998 every other 3D platformer was a very slow game with objectives in giant circle maps, or it was like Crash Bandicoot where being methodical and precise was the point. No other one was actually trying to be a fast and loose feeling game while retaining linear levels and baller momentum. With no precedent it's a damn good first attempt, and even the other styles are harmless at worst with some occasional highlights to gawk at.

i think for me its less "its bad but i like it" and more "I don't fuck with it but this game is good and I see why its good"

No horse in this particular race given I could care less about Sonic but this line of thinking absolutely is valid for someone to have and not in a "so bad it's good" sense

One example I can think of is Drowned God. Coding wise, it's utterly broken; it's easy to softlock progress and even reviews from when it came out complained it was poorly playtested and unoptimized for the OSes it was made for. I can't say it's a good game at all, but I absolutely do like it partially for external factors such as the mystery surrounding the game and the tense feeling I have when I experience that creator's final work, elevated by a few surprisingly memorable moments in the game. Sometimes it is down to somebody "being a coward" about sharing their opinion but it's also healthy to acknowledge you can have guilty pleasures and like something in spite or even because of its flaws.
