So in my earlier review I had said I didn't like the save crystals, and upon replaying it on PS1 with the save crystals, I take it back: love them actually. The fact they are single use forces you to consider how far you can progress without saving and when you absolutely need to use one to overcome a challenge. In a game based around careful and thoughtful gameplay they fit perfectly in a way save-scumming just doesn't. Such a good game.

faxxing. the lack of this kind of design is precisely why i was immediately less hooked on the sequel

@chandler my main issue with the sequel is more in how half the game is spent spinning your wheels. 1 is an extremely focused escalation of platforming challenges and 3 is a globe-trotting adventure. 2 meanwhile feels like a lot of time wasting.

yeah 2 was feeling like a lot of bullshit and uninteresting design for little reason beyond "you can save anywhere so we're free to do whatever we want without consequence". nice to know 3 picks things back up though

how do you feel about the rest of the games overall? would be cool to see a ranked list or something since you're pretty well-read on the series and where its strengths lay

i'm a big dumb dumb and just realized you DO have a list nvm

@chandler: i need to revise that list a little. Anniversary isnt THAT bad and 1 and 3 are better than 4.

also be warned, 3's first 4 levels are some of the hardest in tomb raider history. some of the nastiest traps they have ever devised. it's like a mandatory Scrub Filter you have to complete before the game lets you continue lol.

yeah i've always heard as much about tr3. actually got that game in 3rd grade. had no fucking idea how to get anywhere in it. so i've got some unfinished business there

@chandler: kids playing tomb raider is one of the funniest things ever, because the game is very british in how mean-spirited it is towards the player.
