i will come back to finish this game some day, but its insistence on glossing over the fact that japan did some crazyass war crimes during ww2 kind of annoyed me to no end (and what eventually made me drop the game involved them finally mentioning that japan was occupying china but only in the context of "this japanese guy accidentally gassed a bunch of innocent chinese people but it was an accident!!!!").
of course i'm not saying to make every japanese character a racist, that would be weird, but i'm saying it's really, really, REALLY weird to make a game centered around ww2 that paints japan out to be helpless innocents/does not mention the bad done by the nation to other nations, only the bad that japan receives from other nations. i rambled about this a bit here if you scroll down (https://lonesgamethoughts.blogspot.com/2022/02/rose-guns-days-thoughts-review-this.html#two). again, american media is not innocent of doing this either, and i also don't like american war-related for basically the same reasons.
i have seen some people say that ryukishi is more aware of ww2 happenings than other writers (something about it being mentioned in higurashi, though on my reread a few years ago i didn't notice this), but considering the current status of ciconia, i have the feeling that ryukishi is not extremely politically aware/politically aware enough to write a world war 4 story and he realized that kind of late. he says that he can't write ciconia in a world where bad things are happening/he's waiting for the right time to release it, but with the ability of social media at our fingertips, we can see global injustice at the click of a button. and i hate to be a downer, but it is never going away. there will never be a "right time" to release ciconia because there will always be terrible things happening in this world. he said this statement in december 2023, i am almost sure he is sweating over leah's character and the entirety of the ABN.
...anyways, tie this lack of political awareness into my thoughts about rose guns days. i like the everything else of this game, i just really dislike this element.
