first i wanna preface by saying i didn't 100% the game, i got 120 stars, so i got 49.6% completion. the post-game seemed far far too long so will come back another time to claim the 100%.

the game itself is actually pretty good, it's definitely far better than the original mario galaxy, that's for sure. for reference, i played the 3D all stars port of galaxy 1, and the wii u verison of galaxy 2, so maybe it's just the controls being better suited for the wiimote, but the controls felt a lot better in this game.

the world's were far more memorable too, i can't recall any levels from galaxy 1 whereas i can name multiple that were really fun to play through in this game. my main issue with this game is it seems confused on whether it wants to be linear or sandbox. it stays linear mostly but some galaxies take on a more sandbox-y approach even though the game doesn't really want you to diverge from the main path too much, resulting in awkward levels like the stone cyclone level; a level that is designed for you to take a certain path in order to get 5 stars but is also designed in such a way where you can just jump straight to the "end". seems weird. there are other levels that kinda do this but it's less egregious. overall i think it's fine, though. the boss fights in this game were also far better than galaxy 1's boss fights.

the game has the same slow stuff from galaxy 1 like showing cutscenes for every little thing and locking progression behind some dialogue but these are kinda small nitpicks and don't harm the overall experience too much.

the soundtrack slaps as always, it goes harder than galaxy 1's soundtrack for sure. this being my favorite. WE ARE, WE ARE ON THE CRUIISEEEE!

i gave this game 3.5/5 but i could maybe see myself knocking it up to a 4/5 if the post-game didn't drag as much as it seemingly does, i know that isn't technically apart of the main game, but i'm reviewing this as a whole package, and the game definitely began to drag towards the end, even just getting 120 stars felt quite tedious, although the mostly excellent level design helped for sure.
