The art and sound teams deserve 90% of the profit for this videogame. The spell animations in particular are fantastic, and I don't even care that you can't see any depth on the maps and will continuously run into walls you thought were not next to you. All that is forgiven when I see a 20 second big fireball animation.

That's not to say that the combat isn't good, it's just Chrono Trigger. That's not to say that the world isn't good, it's a pretty neat setting. That's not to say that the story isn't g- you know what yeah I will say that. The story is bullshit. The giant bread arc (actually a real thing I swear I did not make this up) is particularly retarded, but the whole second half of the game really made me want to just stop.

More than the plot itself, this frankly comes with the most boring party members ever seen in any JRPG. Locking the mandatory playable-weird-freak member to the final chapter is a huge mistake already, but more than that the humans are just extremely bland and have no realistic interaction - they just wholesome chungus eachother from the getgo and never stop. Garl is particularly egregious, all the stuff that focuses on him is so insanely forced you'd think this was supposed to be a spiritual successor to Chrono Cross. It's a shame. No party, no RPG, my dad always said.

I can't really describe it better than saying it feels the people behind this really liked Chrono Trigger, but for very different reasons than I did. Frankly they could have had worse combat and removed at least 10 minigames/sidequests if it meant the story and characters could be fixed, if you ask me.

Wait the true ending is locked behind collecting all 60 seashells in hidden chests and minigames? more like Sea of just lost half a star
