Honestly? This game still rules imo. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but it's still a VN classic. Certainly the later entries of the series upstage it but it has a truly delicious atmosphere which I think comes mostly from it initially being a standalone game. It feels smaller in scope than 2 or V3 but I think that allows it to make Hope's Peak feel claustrophobic. Obviously school horror is nothing new, especially in J-horror, but Danganronpa manages to make it feel stylishly eerie and fresh with its neon lighting and anxiety-inducing soundtrack. It has a pulpy, kind of sleazy charm to it, like a B-horror film, and I still love it all these years later. I do think a lot of the commentary about the Japanese school system is going to inevitably be lost on most people unless they go out of their way to read about it, but still it captures that universal feeling of school simultaneously being a nightmare and a sanctuary to young people.

Also it has Celes, who's turbo mega slay is probably the reason why I'm into visual novels and the like in the first place. Like, her design intrigued 13 year old me so much that I immediately got into the game. Lol

Lmao the whole reason i played this game when i was 5th grade or something was just because i wanted to be Celestia so bad.
Love this game, despite all of the hate that it gets and all. You can see that the developers are really trying hard with those games

@YukoImada You get it!! She's so cool. Lmao yeah i think the vitriol they get from certain circles on the internet nowadays is legitimately ridiculous but it's just backlash to how annoying the fandom was a few years ago (which is stupid because every fandom is annoying). Basically everyone I know who is just not very Online (for lack of a better term) but has played them seems to appreciate them, even if it's not for them.

Honestly, i can't agree more with this!
People should appreciate how this game started like a thousound of other games... It motivated a lot of people to do more projects, more videos, more edits, it even helped me to start with editing, and i tell you- the Danganronpa fandom is just CRAZY. I was cancelled like 2 times on TikTok, once because i was a Celeste apologist (i got so much backlash in 2020 it was crazy), and second, because i said that i didn't like someone's 'animation' on one character, so i guess i figured the game will get backlash and eventually fade out anyway
P.S. I just saw a TikTok saying: ''Omg, do y'all remember when we used to like Danganropa? 2020 was the worst fr 💀💀'', imagine
