An expanded game of Contra

This is the Family Computer (Famicom) port of Contra. Even if the American and the Japanese port look similar and share the same art style and engine, the Japanese version has added content, with more animations in the backgrounds, new cheat codes and, most importantly, story cutscenes explaining the plot of the game.

An even better version of Contra, an already awesome game! I recommend playing the English translation created by Stardust Crusaders.

This is pretty much a better version of Contra on the NES, with the addition of some small cutscenes.

I don't think the difficulty of the game is much different from the NES version, but I think there might be less projectiles on the screen overall.

Thanks to the Anniversay Collection, you can try it very easily.

Well damn, what more can you say about this game? It’s Contra! It kicks ass! There’s a flimsy plotline in the Japanese version! The 30-man code still works! Seriously, this game is a blast.. I’m sure everyone knows that though. This is of course the Japanese release of Contra, and there are some extra bonus things that don’t really amount to much in the end, but they’re still pretty cool, and they make you wonder why Konami took that stuff out of the U.S. release. Anyway, go play dammit! And get a second player, for God’s sake.. It’s twice as fun!

One of the better NES-era action games I've played. The difficulty level is extremely frustrating - even with the Konami code. It's practically impossible without cheats and is past the point of being fun. Better than the arcade version and NES versions.

Pretty much an improved version of the NES port. The graphics have more movement and there's more context to the story that the NES one is straight up missing outside the instruction booklet, other than that, it's the same game.

A slightly improved version compared to the NES release. The extra animations and cutscenes between stages add a nice bow to an already amazing package.
Had tons of fun checking this out thanks to the Anniversary Collection!
