The prophecy has been fulfilled. The world shall be ruled by the dragons. On an island far away, their lords prepare for the conquest of the lands. There is only one hope for mankind. The emperor sends out four heroes -- warriors and magicians -- to solve the puzzle of tears and prevent the invasion of the Drakkhen. Drakkhen is a role-playing game with a visual presentation that combines 3D landscapes and 2D interiors. The player's party will travel overland on a flat terrain made up of vectors, on which 2D objects are zoomed (The same type of engine was later used in Eternam). The player will encounter monsters and fight them in real-time combat, and discover the palaces of the dragon lords. Indoors, the player has to find a way through the maze of chambers, solving puzzles and defeating the minions of the Drakkhen. Party members are depicted in four status windows on the left side of the screen, thus allowing to see their current status and equipment at once.

The visuals have some decent touches, as does the music, but the gameplay itself is so clunky that it holds the entire thing back. Between the annoying combat, and the awkward side scrolling done via menu interface, it's just tedious and frustrating to play.

Enemy design and OST among the most notable cus who thought of a dog head shooting lasers lmao, combat being mostly automatic is weird but you get some control at least - though the AI sucks at moving around. ALL OF YOUR GEAR BUT WEAPONS BREAKING CAN SUCK SO MUCH, especially when no durability to see it? as far as i could tell. Getting new gear is fine, not listing the inn(the only shop) on the map also sucks. Magic being confusing is pain, story is very confusing in the SNES version, I imagine it makes more sense on PC but wth at half of it here lol.

Aside from this being the version our group decided to play, I specifically wanted to finish the SNES version to redeem 5 year old me who couldn't beat it as a kid, glad I finally did so, but the pain holds up

Playing Through My Evercade Collection Part 9: Piko Interactive Collection 1

Yepp I still absolutely think this is a terrible little mess of a game. I really didnt like this on the Amiga and I still dont like it on the SNES with bonus crap points given to the game controlling like ass. I somehow however did actually make progress for once which earns back the half star I took away but even then, its just a joyless punishing ugly slog that isn't worth the time or effort to persevere through.

bought because i liked the snes version

Dumb, ugly, and clunky as hell, but it's likely one of the earliest 3D RPGs so it isn't terribly surprising. The early game in particular is extremely miserable no matter what way you look at it. Random encounters aren't like catered towards your level or anything, so you'll be fighting (well, watching your party automatically fight) the same enemies throughout without their strength ever really changing any. What that means is towards the start of the game your entire party will hardly survive just about any encounter, so you have to do a mix of just getting lucky and getting a grip on the game's clunky mechanics. It's not fun, even towards the end, but by then it feels at least a bit more manageable.

Drakkhen sucks. Lots of European games originally made for the Amiga similarly suck, for some reason. Usually though, other examples of those (such as James Pond or Jim Power) are more garish and more amusingly bad, whereas this game is just generally miserable and boring. Most of the music is pretty nice, though, I'll give it that.

another quick play, it got style but on the SNES it's clunky and outdated
