Eye of the Beholder is the definitive game that does the absolute bare minimum of everything it offers. It's a barebones dungeon crawler with no music apart from the main menu, a minimum ruleset of D&D (and even sometimes it's bugged enough that it cant even follow that,) and barely any graphic and sound capability.

The game has two modes of play. First is a pseudo 3D exploration portion where you explore each tile of a dungeon in a first person view akin to the 3D maze screensaver from Windows 95. Then when you encounter an enemy, it switches into an isometric view with each PC and enemy represented by a miniature that has like two animations. None of the modes have music aside from the fanfare that plays when you win a battle, and when you move around in the dungeon sometimes a generic sound will play to try to give life to the creepy ambiance you're in, but there's only like 10 SFX in the pool, including a woman screaming... several times. And that same sample is used every time.

There's not much story to this game. Basically, there is an evil cult run by a beholder that's plaguing the city of Waterdeep, capturing and killing citizens around every corner of the city. You command a party of 4 mercenaries commissioned by the lords of the city to crawl into a dungeon and destroy the source of the cult. Somehow a couple of NPCs you run into while crawling through the dungeon get roped into the story, but I cannot be arsed to remember why they were involved because the story is too dull. You're even given social skills like bluff, intimidate and sense motive during those interactions but they're entirely useless.

I still can't believe I was able to complete this game when I was a kid. Revisiting it now, it's just insane how incredibly dull this dungeon crawler is. The only reason it is not a half star is because of a vampire kobold in this game. He was kind of cool.

Barely playable, and both ugly and boring as sin.
