released on Dec 08, 2023

Echoes of the Fallen is the first DLC of Final Fantasy XVI, which unlocks a whole new story, battles, weapons, accessories, level cap and more. For players who have completed the required quests, this new adventure begins before the base game’s final battle, as strange, dark crystals begin to circulate on the black market. Players will follow Clive and his friends during their investigations as they encounter a group of suspicious traders, leading them to a long-abandoned Fallen tower known as the Sagespire. There, they will unravel the terrible secrets that await within.

This is DLC is serviceable but I doesn't do anything interesting. All you'll find here is a meaty dungeon with a surprisingly difficult boss, even on normal mode. The dungeon was okay and there was an interesting enemy mechanic that was introduced here, but it hardly gets utilized outside of a couple of enemy encounters. There is some neat lore that foreshadows some stuff in the Rising Tide, but the new characters are frankly uninteresting and my investment in the Lore of this world has largely dwindled due to how the base game's story ended up, especially since this DLC doesn't do much with the main cast character-wise. Check out my review of the base game to see my thoughts as it relates to that and the combat.

The boss fight was pretty good though, and I appreciate being challenged on normal difficulty, since the base game is pretty easy most of the time. For that, I think this DLC is worth it, but I don't think this will change anyone's mind if you weren't already a fan of the game in the first place. We'll see how the Rising Tide turns out....

This DLC doesn’t really offer much. It’s less than 2 hours of content (in which the story isn’t very interesting) and nothing new is offered gameplay wise.

I didn’t mind playing it since I plan to jump into Rising Tide right after and it got me back into the flow, but if you returned to the game for this one alone it likely would’ve been very disappointing.

The final boss is pretty good but I can’t say that makes the DLC worth it unless it was much cheaper.

With the recent release of “The Rising Tide” at the time of writing, I figured it would be a good moment to finally tackle both DLCs back to back, and naturally I went by order of launch.

Originally I wasn't expecting much from this particular dlc as the one I was looking forward the most was its follow up, however I still appreciate what this one did for giving the mysterious Fallen a bit more of context as to what happened to them. Along with the new and very busted accessories you can equip that have way more interesting effects to apply in combat.

However the true crowning glory of this DLC is the final boss which once again goes to show that arguably the best part of FFXVI is still its phenomenal bosses.
Also as someone who criticized this game before for its difficulty, I decided to try something out I saw in Twitter in order to spice things up a bit more, which was playing without defensive gear equipped. Which means I was essentially extremely squishy and I could actually be scared of getting hit. While I could consider it a bandaid fix for how the game does difficulty, it was also probably the most fun I’ve had playing it since my first playthrough, being able to lose can also be very good sometimes!

Combat is the real star of this dlc. Fun new accessories, great mini-bosses, and an incredible final boss. Sadly, the story itself is pretty thin. It has some okay world building, but it doesn't really develop the main characters much. I also wish it was a lot longer. Even on Final Fantasy mode, it only took me a couple hours.
