Shien's Revenge

released on Apr 08, 1994

Shien and Aska were swift ninjas fighting in a civil war. Having defeated hundreds of enemy soldiers, monsters suddenly appear and kidnap Aska. It is up to Shien to defeat them and rescue Aska from these creatures beyond the Time Gate. Shien's Revenge is a first-person Operation Wolf-style shooter that puts the player in the role of Shien the ninja. Movement is automatically controlled by the game, which scrolls horizontally or vertically. The player must use his weapons, long-range shuriken (throwing stars) and a close-range dagger in order to defeat various enemy ninjas and creatures that appear on the screen. A set of candles indicate the player's life meter. Power-ups such as rapid fire and scrolls can be picked up by defeating enemies. The use of scrolls produces a powerful attack that damages everything on the screen. At the end of each area, the player encounters a boss who must be defeated through the depletion of its life meter.

If I had a nickel for every obscure game developed by Almanic on SNES involving time travel, I'd have two nickels, which isn't saying much but it's weird that it happened twice.

Kind of novel honestly, but a bit sloppy in its execution. It's a rail shooter of sorts, in first person similar to Dynamite Duke or Shinobi's bonus stages, but with some added emphasis on blocking attacks and close combat. Cool on paper, but a bit overstimulating, even without taking into account the insane difficulty this game boasts. This game's fucking impossible, maybe not literally but it sure feels like it. Not really in an interesting or fun way either, it's just kind of bullshit and too much to take in. I could see myself liking it more if it was easier or at least more fair, could probably also do without ending with a boss rush. I did try easy mode at first but it cut me off after stage 4 was complete and I had to start over on normal mode, much to my dismay. I definitely wanted to like this more than I did, but I guess it is what it is.

This game is actually compatible with both the Super Scope and the SNES mouse, but I used the default controls. I highly doubt it'd be a better experience with the former, I doubt anything is, but perhaps the mouse...?

Fascinatingly bland and repetitive rail shooter for the Super Nintendo with 2 notable features:
- you can use the SNES mouse to control the cursor
- if you aren't firing your ninja star projectiles, you hold out a ninja dagger which can damage enemies in the foreground and block incoming projectiles

Unfortunately some of the levels are bizarrely paced with few enemies, and bosses are typically the same type of dagger swiping and projectile blocking nonsense. It's.....amusing for like an hour, tops.
