Not a final review - Ongoing impressions

Controls for Mario in SM64 are pretty smooth. You find yourself wishing you had a full-360 control of the camera, but the right stick is an improvement over the C buttons.

Currently at 96 stars, trying to go for 120 before Ultimate Bowser. It's been a huge pleasure to revisit this game.

On Sunshine, the emulation is making everything look really good except for the cutscenes - certain voice lines, particularly from the Piantas, sound extremely muffled. And then the cropping and brightness settings they're using really make the cutscenes incongruous with the gameplay.

I'm one of those who ranks Sunshine third among these three games and I'm still struggling. Mario is so damn slippery when landing on platforms, that it irrationally angers me. The music and gameplay animation makes me happy, though.

Reviewers, writers, gamers, etc: nooooo you can't just rerelease the games with minimal work done so that it only barely looks or plays differently when companies like Bluepoint are out here doing complete overhauls of older games T-T

me: haha luma go "TRANSFORRRRRRM"

I bought this to finally finish Mario 64 and Sunshine, something little kid me could not do back then. My quick reviews on the first two is that they do not hold up and there is no real need to play them longer than say the first 2 hours to appreciate what they were doing at the time.

This collection as a whole is kind of sad when held up to others of its kind that also try to showcase the behind the scenes making of these childhood games for some folks. Everything in here just feels bare bones. Even the minor touch ups and game soundtracks stuck in the game just aren't enough in my opinion to make these re-releases feel valuable for a limited time release.

Don't feel like you need to buy a marked up copy of this if you didn't buy a copy before the cut off date in March 2021. It's honestly not even worth the $60 price tag it was sold for.

To celebrate Mario's 35th Anniversary, Nintendo released a compilation of Mario's 3D games. "Super Mario Galaxy 2"? What's that? All we have in this package is Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. No extras, no concept art or anything like that. We do have soundtracks but, overall it not that crazy.

Now the controversy begins. It was announced that it would be a limited edition release till March 31st 2021. Both physical and digital releases of the game are limited. People leaked the game and it was found out that they are just emulations (mainly). SM64 and SMS are running off of Nintendo made emulators and SMG is being compiled on the spot but, an emulator is used for graphics and such.

This version of SM64 is the Shindou version. This means no BLJ's or gay Bowsers. The camera gets inverted at times and it's a PAIN getting used to it. If you've never played the games congrats you aren't going to have issues. If you have muscle memory of the original then it's gonna be hard to adapt. Overall, if you don't mind the small changes and inverted camera then have fun.

Nintendo has starved us of SMS for ages. This is the first rerelease of the game in over 18 years. I really enjoyed this one particularly, mainly because there have been little to no changes to the game. It's now in 16:9 but, its still the same old SMS. A good thing for speedrunners and people who don't want to play the game the right way.

Mario Galaxy is 60 FPS and 16:9. Looks fantastic. Doesn't hold up as well as it used to. Controls are quite clunky and its hard to between the freeroam aspects of SMS and SM64 to the linear clunky gameplay of SMG.

It was a good play but is it worth 60 dollars? In my opinion, yes. If you have played these games in the past and aren't desperately needing them then I'd say pass. If you want these classics on the go or haven't played any of them then go get the game.

While all three of the games are good, Sunshine and 64 being absolute masterpieces. That being said the collection itself is not worth the asking price. Fine emulation all around, I found very little bugs (though I'm usually not one to notice frame rate issues and the like) but the dearth of content outside of these three old games is appalling. Should have been released for 20 bucks if it was just going to be three Mario ROMs ported to the switch.

There is not much to complain about when it comes to what can be regarded as three of the most popular and enjoyed games of all-time. If you are looking for hours of fun to take you away from the terrible world we live in today, then this collection is perfect. The price of €60 may seem hefty to many, but for me, Nintendo could have easily sold these three games separately and people would have still bought them, so I am glad that something that once seemed like a far-off rumour was able to exist physically in my hands.

Obviously, the collection would have been perfected if it had been remakes of the three games, rather than just upscaled ports, but sometimes in life not everything can be the ideal version of what you would want. I too would have adored remakes of these three games, but my want for remakes does not detract from my enjoyment of playing the originals.

3 of my all-time favorite Mario games packed in one? Yes please.

I had fun with it despite all the hate.

No, i will not fall with the "These games were good when they released so they are just as good 20 years later and the game deserves 4 stars" logic, even then sunshine is kinda ass. This was sold as a $60 non virtual console game in 2020, an official release, and even small re-releases fix issues in games like DMC2 on the switch. But this Sunshine is still janky, and 64 still has a fixed camera, all with a lowball resolution because they couldn't get their emulator working well. Otherwise, yeah, the games are as solid as they were back then so its not entirely bad but not worth the price its being sold. If you want to know how i feel about those games read my reviews on them so i don't have to retype it here but as a collection not a big fan of this.

Cons:
>Not many Quality of Life changes
>No fixes or updates to Mario 64
>No much need changes and updates to Sunshine
>Missing an entry in the galaxy series, it feels weird
>Only a music player is given as extras to pad out the rest of the games worth
>not as good as what other collections or re-releases do especially older ones from Nintendo themselves, and their last mario all stars.

Galaxy gets a 5 but Sunshine and 64 have aged less well.

I can't really say that Mario 3D All Stars is a bad collection tbh, it's just a basic collection packing the three 3D Mario games all on a Nintendo Switch system, they obviously could have done much more with 35th anniversary present that was only limited released (Geeze, why did you make this limited, Nintendo?), but I'm not mad at all that it exists. If anything, I'm happy that there's at least a way of being able to play these games on the go.

i’m not getting those damn blue coins

Let's be honest, you're buying this for Galaxy and playing 64 on the go, other than that if you find it, you better hope it isn't $60 because this isn't worth it for it

Good collection of Emulator's however I would've loved to have had more options for screen filters, resolution, and of course having the best 3D Mario Galaxy 2 included.

Subpar emulation of three masterpieces

Score: 4/10

Only two of the games here are good and only one is great, but that doesn't stop the fact that this is a great package. Other then 64 which is a piece of garbage that people need to accept is terrible.

Weird how barebones this collection is, and honestly not the ideal way to play any of these games, but Mario Galaxy alone is worth the price of admission if you have never played. Weird that the only bonus feature is the option to listen to the soundtracks though. I feel like with a little extra content this could have been a great package for both oldheads and people who want to play classics they may have missed, but it feels like it was pumped out last minute and is therefore only really worth it if you missed these on original release.

All of the problems with this port such as the limited releases to the emulations are all true and have been said over and over. Even still though, if you haven't played these games, all of them are phenomenal experiences and are each deserving of your time. Not to mention portability is a godsend. The low score reflects the ports and not the games.

Was looking forward to Sunshine being better than I remembered. But it wasn't. 64 is still sublime and dipping in and out of Galaxy during lunch breaks (or, uh, during work) for a cheeky star has kept me sane recently.

Super Mario 64 is still a 10/10 game, but the reason this gets rated lower is the little effort Nintendo put into this collection and that it was removed from the eshop for no good reason.

Lazy port bundle. The games are great, but graphical improvements are limited to, like, the HUD and stuff. Everything controls as you'd expect it to if you're played any of these games before.

Roms emuladas en un cartucho.

It was just a treat for these games to come back but i wish it transferred better on the switch

Very good collection of great games

Literally the bare minimum for some of the greatest games of all time that deserved so much more.
