There's a lot of minor tweaks that add up to make the experience better than the first. The planes feel a bit better and the menus are more functional, the music and presentation are really good, and I appreciate some of the streamlining. Unfortunately I think it suffers a bit in the actual design in a lot of ways. There's not a lot of levels I can say are outright bad, but there is just a lot of missed potential coming off the first game, which hurts a lot more since it's shorter. There are a couple neat gimmicks but they are usually only used once, and I think the final levels especially are pretty disappointing. Still a pretty solid game though.

wow they really made air combat and then decided that they needed to lock the fuck in. and they were right this game is fucking awesome

Just a better version of Air Combat. It's not improved enough to be amazing or anything but the addition in gameplays do add a bit more to it. Sadly movement is still restricted though you can do loops, it's veryyy slow.

Ace combat started come into it's own

im glad they added the new control style in this game but that should've been the default one, I would've missed it if i hadn't checked settings first

Best PS1 Ace Combat game. It was fun to play, comfortable to control.

An improvement in all fronts, especially in the music cause this shit is fire

Some small improvements have been made regarding the first episode, but it still lacks serious storytelling. You go through missions without being immersed in a story. However, the gameplay is nice, and the additional objectives are a nice way to prolong the length of each mission and add some difficulty, as you will have to monitor the number of missiles you have left!

Awww yeah, now that's a motherfucking video game sequel.

Ace Combat 2 is more Ace Combat. Bigger, bolder, better, the hallmarks of a killer sequel are all here and accounted for. The satisfying air combat dogfighting is even more fun, the campaign has more going on with alternative routes to up the replayability, and the soundtrack is as rocking as ever. Top notch stuff all around!

But what really makes AC2 better than the first game is that the "Alert! Body damaged!" sound effect only plays once or twice after getting shot, rather than 12 times in a row like the original.

Amazing aviation simulation game!
A lot of childhood memories here :)

Cute little game. It was actually my first Ace Combat and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Played this one with a NEGCON too which made the experience pretty sweet.

Barely remember playing this, as this game was from my early childhood. My brother played it all the time, and I would watch him. He never let me play it while he was around, though!

I think Air Combat tricked me into believing all PS1 just looked like that. The flat ground texture which resulted in difficult-to-judge altitude is a total non-issue in the sequel. The flight controls have been tightened, the music even better and the story? A mild improvement, but not something I cared about.

Ace Combat's biggest strength lies in its missions, where we some much needed variety. Standard dogfights are interspersed between defence objectives, time restrictions and levels that require precise navigation. Not every level is great, but the diversity is appreciated regardless. Environments are more unique, too, with the highlight being a city at night which lets you squeeze right by the buildings if you're feeling brave. As this is a PS1 game with access only to a D-Pad, controls aren't as accurate as you'd hope, making some maneuvers riskier han they'd be if full analog control was possible. Regardless, it works well enough that I can forgive the shortcomings.

Ace Combat 2 is great, a solid step up from its predecessor and a fantastic foundation for entries moving forward. I'm particularly excited to see how the series fares on more powerful hardware (particularly given the dual analog setup), but that'll have to wait a little longer.

Really good game! This is a really good PS1 game. Structure is really similar to the first game yet it feels more expanded upon, more varied missions and personally a more badass OST.

A step up from the original, better missions and better graphics to boot! Ace Combat 2 is probably my favorite in the PS1 trilogy because it still retains the arcade action of the first game and adds a story now. Also one of the best looking on the system. Project Aces never fails

Absolutely repugnant that this game series advertises itself as representing asexual people like me but there is not a single ace person to be found, queerbaiting has gotten out of hand

Good visuals and a hard hitting soundtrack coalesce into a game that can only be described as a vibe. I continue my Ace Combat journey as I play the sequel

I described the first game's visual design as "simple" but Ace Combat 2 is a really vibrant game. You'll go from snowy mountains to a rocky desert, or fly over the cold blue sea in what feels like a cold winter day and the game's vibrant colours so a great job of immersing you in the world as you fight off this enemy invasion.

Guys...I did it. I finally changed the controller layout from Novice to Expert!!! I don't know if the first game had it but the expert layout gives you much better control over the plane that I'm surprised it's not the standard. The gameplay is pretty similar to the first one but it is better, as for the levels themselves I think only a few levels in this game irked me due to their design not being great. Sometimes the target would be around too tight a corner or be smack dab behind a narrow passageway. This game also has less levels than the last one, which wouldn't be an issue but this game also has way few choices in what levels you want to approach. The last level was also unfortunately a bit of a let down, I still think the first game's final enemy slowly coming into your view with that ominous music in the background far outshines this game's lackluster finale.

Oh yeah the soundtrack? It's stellar. Never did I expect that jazz would go so well with blowing up airplanes but here we are. Being locked into firefights with enemy planes as you both desperately try your best to destroy each other while hard rock music plays just pumps you up. It really is something you have to play for yourself to experience.

Ace Combat 2 is a fun time, definitely better than its predecessor I'd say. I'm curious to see what the remake is like, but I'm sure it won't match the original. Anyways, time to enter the Electrosphere.
