There's a sense of serenity that comes from this game even in its toughest platforming segments, a sort of playgroundy feeling resembling playing pretend more than just about any other game I can think of.
Sure, the bosses are too backloaded and yes, the inconsistent traction can be irritating while running is too slow, and of course the attack and ear-floating are both a wee bit short... but with pointed and clever design accounting for these things and more, I don't find myself needing to harp on them very much.
Strong direction on many fronts, a dollop of soul, perfect technological timing, and a masterful touching upon the shared experience of childhood dreams bring together a game I would have regretted not playing before I die.

I know totally get why this game has the audience it does. It's cute, it's fun, and bittersweet by the end. I adore the cute story book look of the game. It kinda feels like a children's stop motion show with how the characters animate. The gameplay itself is fun. Good balance between challenging and easy. And the plot was way heavier than I honestly could've ever expected. I commend the team for going in such a direction.
Also I find it hard to believe this was directed by the NES Ninja Gaiden guy.

After first playing this game through the Reverie remake, I decided to come back to the OG PSX version. Great idea on my behalf, because the visual presentation of this game still blows any of the remakes out of the water. They're still a perfectly fine way to experience Klonoa, but I highly recommend playing the original release of at least this one to get a good grasp on the kind of vibe this game is going for. The pre-rendered scenes and visual style add a lot, trust me.
I'm glad I took the time to pick it up, as I really enjoyed its enemy oriented platforming.
Klonoa's gimmick is simple, you pick up enemies to use them in platforming and combat problems. You don't jump on heads, you don't dash, all you've got is a jump button with a slim hover and a grab button. It isn't a long game but manipulating enemies never got felt boring or creatively bankrupt in creating challenges.
The titular Klonoa's design is alright, it's cool for 97' but like most things of that year it's a bit extra although not bad by any means. Environment design and art is cool, both gameplay and art wise. Antagonist and his sidekick are hella cool though, and their narrative helps build them a lot, especially Ghadius with his sick cape.
Some scenes like the attack on the village and the farewell were shockingly heavy, it got no right to draw a tear from me.
I don't know why didn't I hear about Klonoa earlier. Boy I surely hope that this loveable mascot didn't get milked to death.

One of my favorite games of all time, Klonoa is really something special. From it's wonderful world and art direction, to the mechanics of grabbing and throwing enemies, to it's charming world, and to it's fun and emotionally devastating story, Klonoa is one of those games I can just sit down and beat comfortably whenever I want and have the same emotions I felt when I first played it. The best of the playstation library in my opinion and one of the best games ever made.
i’ve played a lot of kirby games (which i do love) but i never really experienced a 2.5D platformer with a fair challenge before, and it’s great, it leads to very creative level design. the story is adorable, short, and also surprisingly soul-crushing? but the aesthetics and music is what knocks it out of the park. This is the first game i got the pleasure of playing on my new ps vita and it was just a blast the whole way through. recommend hard
"wahoo! dupurudu!"
i believe this is the truest a 5/5 can get. this is one of the best platforming experiences i've ever had. it oozes soul, it plays perfect, the ost is great, the difficulty feels perfectly finetuned. i am in love.
decided to buy the remake duology on a whim, played halfway through 1, loved it so much that i downloaded this and decided to play through twice. it is that good.
this version is the better version too, barring the slight slipperyness on platforms, the visual flair just goes so far. i just can't get over how perfect this is. oh my god. i believe in klonoa supremacy.

Klonoa Door To Phantomile wraps you a warm comforting blanket of fantasy before violently tearing the rug out from under you.
The world it constructs is so fantastical and tranquil. Painted with utterly beautiful music and a gorgeous art direction. Its simple fantasy story is inviting and colourful....well, until your grandpa dies. Suddenly the game starts taking itself a lot more seriously and story starts ramping up the tense.
The ending is the real best part as it flips the entire game on its head with a shocking reveal that just leaves you melancholy.
What a game.

An incredibly special game that, is unfortunately somewhat difficult to go back to after playing the sequel, at least for me.
The story is one of the best written video game stories, ever. The visuals are pure joy, and the gameplay is very simple and pick-up and play!
The music is somewhat hit and miss (for me) and the gameplay gets a tad grating near the end, but it is absolutely worth a playthrough, if for no other reason than to see the ending, and to play the followup!
