Complete playthrough. A short but oh-so-sweet point-and-click puzzle game, created in two weeks for a game jam, Loco Motive is the best third-party attempt to capture the feel of classic LucasArts games that I can remember ever playing. Tasking the player to solve a murder mystery on a train, a streamlined interface minimises any friction in interactions and the puzzles avoid ever becoming excessively obscure. Where the game really excels is in its superb writing, with a sense of humour evident throughout - there are plenty of somewhat 'fourth wall'-breaking asides to camera from the protagonist - and enhanced by expressive pixel-art. Nods to the absurdity of the seemingly bottomless pockets that so many point-and-clicks rely on are a great example of this, for example - in both dialogue and animation. While you'll be done within about an hour, anyone who's even the slightest fan of the genre should definitely be playing this - especially as it's free!

There's not a great deal of puzzles involved here and the fact that an item can only be either a thing that can be looked at or picked up/interacted with seems to limit what they can do (I'm not sure if this was a choice that was made or a limitation of the engine).

Even with this limitation, I missed that I could pick up an item from the first room and it was quite frustrating.

It somewhat errs on the side of playing with silly names and mishearing words for comic effect, but it's a nice quick game.

They say that they're looking to expand it (More characters, dialog, puzzles & places to explore!) so will be interesting to see how that turns out.

A fun one hour point and click. Unfortunately, my partner also made a mystery game called Loco Motive for a school project (which later fell apart due to art school drama), which means I'm biased against this one for reasons that aren't fair to it at all.

A neat little Lucasarts esque throwback. Sure its short and light on content but it was made for a 2 week gamejam and its free. So there. Its still worth whizzing through and makes me interested in what the developers could do given more time.

short point and click murder mystery on a train

Done for a 2 week jam? I need to spend my time better.
