Madden NFL 20... yikes. It's basically the same game as last year with a few minor changes and a fresh coat of paint. The gameplay feels clunky, the commentary is still annoyingly repetitive, and Franchise mode gets barely any love. On top of that, microtransactions are everywhere, making it feel like a money grab. Unless you're a die-hard football fan desperate for the latest roster update, this one is a hard pass.
Madden 20 is my favorite game of all time, for some reason with thinking over things I’ve come to realize this game personally has been with me through some of my most difficult times.
Recently EA announced the game will be taken offline on April 15th, 2024 and it made me sad, I will never forget the OP Eric Dickerson card, the actually decent story, and the most fun I’ve personally ever had on a franchise ever.
Madden 20 for me, is the greatest game of all time.

As a preface I've never owned a Madden game before. There's so much Madden slander around that I thought I wouldn't enjoy this game... Turns out I'm a degenerate that got addicted to the face of the franchise mode! I constantly had a "just one more game" feeling where I'd play Madden into the night (would ruin me the next day).
The thing that sold me was when I switched from Arcade to Simulation. Before I was scoring >50 pts a game but now I was scoring 6 interceptions a game. It became addicting to learn about all the routes and how to read a defense. I started to really like the dagger plays, as well as out routes. I'm still bad but it really gave me an appreciation for the sport of football that I didn't have before. Getting to use real playbooks is super cool and partly why it makes the Madden franchise so special.
Side note 2v2 arcade mode is soooooooo good. There's so many ridiculous plays, it's hard to find games that will make you laugh that hard every couple minutes.

Such a downgrade from previous entries. I bought it cause I moved and had to get rid of my Madden 19 hard copy and this was for sale.
Everything about Madden 20 is a downgrade. Superstars make the game supremely unbalanced. The franchise is literally the same except fro specialized positions, which should have been added years ago, and so on.

A decent modern Madden. I found this version somewhat fun but I recently got Madden 08 for the playstation 2 and that game, released 12 years earlier, has so many more features and is so much better, I'd rather play that as a football simulation game. Pretty tragic when you think about it. Madden 08, 2 generations prior, 12 years its elder, that is the game that surpasses Madden 20.
Early in the year I came across a free month - or was it $0.99? - trial of EA Access and decided to give it a shot. Despite not caring much about football since, oh, 2013 or so (and especially after the Kaepernick debacle) I found this game weirdly compelling. I get why a lot of modern Madden players complain about this game - they all play Ultimate Team, and that mode sounds predatory in a supremely evil way - but I think the Franchise mode is actually pretty cool. I hadn't touched the mode since Madden NFL 14 or so, an era of Madden I would confidently describe as "dogshit" and was surprised to find a bunch of fun and sensible RPG mechanics tucked into the mode in addition to all the usual bells and whistles the mode has had for years. The game's got a good, dynamic commentary system thanks to using no-name voice actor dudes instead of established TV personalities (or that's the impression I get anyway) and the practice modes that give your players XP based on your performance are also really good at teaching football, something that's become way too complicated for the average person to understand.
These 11 hours were crammed into a little under a week, and when I dropped it I dropped it, because the knees on these players still look ridiculous and the running game still feels like a comedy of errors once the new graphic shine wears off, but my impression of this game was surprisingly pleasant given how down Alex Navarro has been on this franchise for, I dunno, most of his life? I used to almost exclusively play Madden and NCAA franchise modes as a kid while devouring new and favorite albums, and it was really refreshing to spend a week during the early optimism of Biden's presidency reliving a bit of my childhood.
